Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A good example of a late Neolithic to early Bronze Age 'horseshoe' type flint scraper. From the flat platform area at the top, the sides angle downwards, creating a roughly trapezoidal top section; the lower two thirds of the implement have rounded edges. The surface of the tool is convex and has been extensively worked. Several vertical and angled flake removal scars mark a central ridge from which radiate downwards several other scars. The majority of narrow scars are concentrated around the bottom end of the tool, although there is evidence of finer retouch and grinding around al…

A good example of a flint 'thumbnail' type scraper of late Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. At the top, the implement retains a portion of the flat core platform. From here the sides angle downwards and outwards, extending into a rounded bottom edge. The upper surface of the tool is convex, having been formed by the removal of a radiating pattern of narrow flakes. The majority of retouch is to the distal and right hand (as you look at it) edges. The reverse is flat and the bulb-of-percussion has been removed. The flint is light to mid grey in colour and has little surface patinat…

A flint scraper of probable Neolithic date. This implement is very simple in form, having been made from a large flake. The flake is sub-circular in plan, has a convex upper surface and a flat underside. The upper surface retains much of the original cortex, the only exception being where the limited re-touching has occurred at one end, where the removal of six or seven narrow flakes has created a crude scraping edge. Interestingly, the level of patination on the underside of the tool suggests that this flake was of considerable antiquity when it was selected for use as a tool; in f…

A flint End scraper of early Neolithic date (C. Butler 2005; pp. 127). The implement has been made from a broad, thick flake. It is sub-oval in plan, having a deliberately flattened bottom edge. There is a limited amount of re-touching to the rounded top edge and parallel long sides. The convex upper surface of the tool is also roughly worked, with three or four uneven flake removal scars and a portion of the original flint cortex remaining. There is no reworking on the reverse, where, at the top, there is a small section of the core platform above a bulb-of-percussion. The flint is…

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Bedford
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint scraper of possible Bronze Age date. The implement has been made from a flake which is broader than it is high and is of an irregular shape. The top edge is flat and represents part of the core platform. The upper surface of the tool is roughly flat, with several broad flake removal scars visible. Extending downwards from the right hand end of the flat top edge is a short, convex side, which has been carefully re-touched. This curved side extends into a straighter side, also carefully re-touched, in this case by the removal of several narrow, vertical pressure flakes. The a…

A small flint blade of probable late Mesolithic date. The blade is thin and has a slightly concave ventral face. It is uncertain whether or not it is complete. The Dorsal face has a central vertical arise, which creates a sub-triangular profile; a further two angled arrises are located at the distal end. One side has numerous shallow flake removal scars. On the reverse is a bulb-of-percussion. The flint is a heavily patinated blueish-white colour. The object measures 22.3mm long, 9.4mm wide and 2.9mm thick. The weight is 0.6g.

A re-touched flint flake tool of probable Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. The tool has been made from an irregular flake which retains the cortex on one edge. Re-touching is confined to the one straight edge, which has been pressure flaked all the way along its length to create a cutting or scraping tool. At the proximal end of the dorsal surface is a diffuse bulb-of-percussion. The flint is dark brownish-grey in colour. The tool measures 28.9mm long, 21.5mm wide and 5.1mm thick. The weight is 4.91g.

A re-touched flint flake tool of probable Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. The flake from which the tool has been made is sub-oval in plan and has a curved profile. The convex dorsal surface bears numerous arrises, aligned in various directions. The more regular, concave vertical side has been pressure-flaked along its length to create a scraping edge with a small notch at the bottom. The other side is slightly convex towards the distal end. This side shows possible signs of use rather than re-touching. On the ventral surface is a bulb-of-percussion and diffuse rippling. The flin…

A fragment of a flint blade of probable early Neolithic date. The blade is parallel-sided, of thin section and has a rounded end. The dorsal surface bears several longitudinal arrises. On the ventral surface is a small bulb-of-percussion and rippling. The break is straight and the patination suggests it probably occurred in antiquity. The flint is a mottled and patinated light to mid blueish-grey colour. The tool measures 14.6mm long, 10.6mm wide and 1.5mm thick. The weight is 0.29g.

A re-touched flint flake tool of probable Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. The flake is roughly drop-shaped. At the proximal end is a portion of the flat core platform and an adjacent bulb scar. The dorsal surface retains much of the original cortex and has two small areas of re-touch, one at the proximal end and one at the distal. In both areas re-touch is non-invasive, comprising three or four shallow, narrow flakes. On the ventral surface there is a small area of invasive re-touch, located a short distance up from the distal end. The flint is a heavily patinated light bluei…

A retouched flint core tool of probable early Neolithic date. The core is roughly worked, semi-circular in section, with three to four vertical blade removal scars on the dorsal surface. On the ventral surface the position of the bulb-of-percussion indicates that this may have been a multi-platform core. There is evidence of abrupt retouch to two of the longer sides. The flint is an unpatinated dark grey colour. The tool measures 30.8mm long, 33.1mm wide and 14.1mm thick. It weighs 15.8g.

A heavily patinated flint blade of probable Mesolithic to early Neolithic date. The blade is roughly rectangular, although there is a slight increase in width towards the distal end. The dorsal surface has an off-centre vertical arise which splits into a 'V-shaped' slope at the distal end. A small portion of the core platform is visible, as is the bulb-of-percussion. At two points along one of the long sides are shallow notches; the lower of these has possibly been created deliberately. The irregular distal end also shows signs of having been deliberately blunted. The tool measu…

A retouched flint flake tool of probable late Neolithic to early Bronze Age date. The flake is roughly semi-circular in plan. At the proximal end is a bulb scar, from which emanate ripples. The convex distal end shows evidence of abrupt retouch and there is a notch, which may or may not be deliberate. Some cortex remains on the dorsal surface of the dark grey, unpatinated flint.
