Small waste flint, probably from tool knapping. The flint is quite small and of dark brown colour. The surface and edges are still crisp and seem hardly worn at all. Although there may be signs of retouch, there are no traces of patination or further working. Because of its size and doubtful origin it is classed here as waste flake or debitage.

Small flint waste flake / debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (3500 - 2100 BC). The flake is irregular in both plan and profile. It has number of regular facets (caused by flaking) on the upper (dorsal) face of the flake. There is a patch of cortex (the rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present on the dorsal edge. This suggests that this flake comes from the secondary phase of tool production. The cortex is white and is similar to that of flint nodules from chalk areas. The underside (ventral face) of the flake shows a small neat bulb of percussion, which is position…

Small flint waste flake / debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (3500 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly sub-triangular in both plan and profile. It has number of regular facets (caused by flaking) on the upper (dorsal) face of the flake. There is no evidence of cortex (the rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present on either face. This suggests that this flake comes from the tertiary phase of tool production. On one edge is a smooth rounded bevel. This has been created by wear, rather than flaking, and suggests that this piece of debitage is in fact from the re-working o…

Two possibly knapped flint flakes or debitage. The debitage both have fire-fractured surfaces, and only one has a large area of cortex remaining. Both have negative flake scars. Together they weigh 15.1g. The flakes are possibly dated to the Neolithic to Bronze Age periods ( (c. -3500 to c. -1500). The fire-fracturing may have occurred recently or in prehistory. If it occurred in prehistory there are different theories way flint was burnt and the resemblance to an arrowhead is accidental. Fire-fractured flint may have been used in cooking, for example to create steam ovens, to be cr…

A waste flake of flint. The flake is 60.6mm long, 18.3mm wide and 7.2mm thick. The flake is a tertiary flake which is curved. There is some edge damage on the flake but it does not appear to have been further worked. It is counted as debitage – the waste flakes produced during the production of a tool. The flake has a slight patina and is opaque. It is grey with white inclusions. It probably dates from the Neolithic period. Small chips of white quartz were also found in the area.

Primary flint waste flake. Dark and light grey patchy flint with a glossy patina on the ventral face. A flake from a naturally weathered and damaged piece of flint. The dorsal face has several scars from natural weathering and tumbling. There are some small patches of nodule coretex on one edge of the flake. There is a large striking platform at the proximal end and a large bulb of percussion and clear waves of percussion on the ventral surface. Date: Neolithic to Bronze Age Dimensions: 67 mm x 42 mm x 14 mm. Weight: 38 g

Small irregular flint waste flake / debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (3500 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and D shaped in cross section. It has number of regular facets (caused by flaking) on the upper (dorsal) face of the flake. There are also a number of hinge fractures caused by flaws within the flint matrix. There is no evidence of cortex (the rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present on either face. This suggests that this flake comes from the tertiary phase of tool production. A flint waste flake. Mid brown flint with large pale grey patches and a high gloss patina. There is a small area of off-white nodule cortex at the distal end. There is a small striking platform at the proximal end and a small bulb of percussion with a bulbar scar on the ventral face. The dorsal face is heavily worked with numerous small, elongate flaking scars from the production of bladelets. the scars have marked waves of percussion. There is some irregular loss at the proximal end of the dorsal face and this, together with the fact that the flake is quite thick, suggest this is a co…

Two secondary waste flakes. Irregular flakes, both of banded light grey-brown and dark grey flint with a low gloss patina on the light grey brown areas and a milky-white patina on the dark grey. Both have areas of yellowed nodule cortex. Both flakes have some recent edge damage. The first flake has a small striking platform and a bulb of percussion with a bulbar scar. The distal end has been snapped off. There are two flaking scars on the dorsal surface flanking a large area of cortex. The second flake is a fragment from the distal end of a larger piece. Again the rest has been snappe…

Two tertiary waste flakes. Elongate flakes, both of mid grey-brown with occasional off-white patches and a mid gloss patina. Both flakes have some recent edge damage. Both flakes are indicative of blade production. The first flake has a small striking platform and a bulb of percussion with a bulbar scar. There are prominent waves of percussion on the ventral face. There are several flaking scars on the dorsal surface. The distal end is wider than the proximal end and appears to be broken. The second flake has had the proximal end snapped off.
