Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two worked flints, both probably scrapers. One of the scrapers is largely cortical on the ventral face. There appears to be retouch along the right edge, probably allowing the flint to be used as a scraper. This flint measures 31.3 mm long, 26.25 mm wide, 9.4 mm thick and weighs 8 grams. The flint is an orange to brown in colour. The second flint may also be a small scraper. Retouch has been applied to several parts of the flint around the edges. It measures 18.6 mm in length, 11.1 mm wide, 4.8 mm thick and weighs 0.9 grams. It is an orange to dark brown in colour. The f…

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A retouched flint flake of probable Neolithic date. The flake is sub-trapezoidal in shape and appears to be broken, missing its proximal end. It has been retouched using pressure flaking on the left lateral edge, and was possibly used as a cutting blade. The flint is a pale cream in colour. It measures 15.4 mm long, 24.65 mm wide, 2.7 mm thick and weighs 1.3 grams.

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A prehistoric worked flint, probably a late Neolithic to early Bronze Age arrowhead. The flint is broken, making its precise function slightly uncertain. However, it has been finely retouched in the manner seen on many arrowheads of this period and there is a strong possibility it is a broken arrowhead. The flint is brown in colour and has been subject to retouch around all edges. It is sub-trapezoidal in plan, but presumably would have been sub-triangular in shape prior to the break. It seems likely that the tip of the arrowhead is the part that is missing, although rotating …

A Neolithic or early Bronze Age flint scraper. The scraper is cortical on the dorsal face, though the cortex has been removed by retouch applied from the dorsal surface. The retouch has been applied to the lateral sides and to a lesser extent at the distal end. There is little evidence for retouch at the butt. The cortex is a brown ochre to cream in colour whilst the flint on the ventral face is a deep brown. The scraper is sub-oval in shape and lentoid in section. It measures 30.4 mm long, 25.8 mm wide, 8.9 mm thick and weighs 8.1 grams.

The flint used is pale to dark grey in colour. A second flake may also have been used as a scraper, and this one also has retouch along both lateral edges and its distal end. A prehistoric flint object, probably a Neolithic or Bronze Age scraper. The flint appears to have a bulb of percussion and bulb scar at the proximal end, and retouch has been applied to the distal end, applied from both ventral and dorsal faces. The flint is a cream to grey colour with ochre brown in places. The flint is not clearly diagnostic of a closely defined prehistoric period, and is likely to be Neolithic or Bronze Age in date, dating from circa 4000 to 1500 BC. If more diagnostic artefacts were recovered from the same area, this might allow suggestion of a more closely define…

A prehistoric knapped flake, probably of Neolithic or early Bronze Age in date. The flint has a clear bulb of percussion at the proximal end as well as a striking platform. There are also negative scars on the dorsal surface where other flakes have been removed. Possibly very fine retouch is visible on the left edge, although this may have been caused by abrasion. The tip has been broken off, and judging by the even patina on the flake this seems to have occurred some time ago, although whether this occurred in prehistory is difficult to determine. The flint is a mottled ochre brown i…

A collection of twenty-nine knapped flint waste flakes or debitage, probably dating to the Neolithic period between 4000 – 2200 BC (collective weight: 117.57g). None of these flakes/ debitage appear to have a bulb of percussion or radial scars visible, although ripples or ‘lunettes’ are evident on most pieces indicating the force of the striking or knapping and some have multiple arrises. The bulb of percussion is clearly visible on the ventral side below the striking platform with only slight and sparse radiatting ribbles or 'lunettes'. There does also appear to be possible radial scars radiatting outwards from the bulb. On the dorsal, there is a line of off-white cortex along the left side with a large flaking scar in the centre running nearly to the end of the tool's length. A curved/ smei-circular blade to the right side on the dorsal which continu…

A Neolithic flint scraper, dating from 4000-2200 BC (length: 27.2mm; width: 20.5mm; thickness: 8.5mm; weight: 4.68g). There is a large flaking scar from the top right side of the dorsal creating a ridge down the centre. This flint has been re-touched heavily on the dorsal side to either side of the artefact’s length to create sloped sharp edges. There are no specific arrises on the dorsal due to the large amount of pressure flaking. The breaks at either end could well be recent. A knapped secondary flint flake knapped from an opaque mid brown coloured flint. The ventral surface has a bulb of percussion, bulbar scars and concentric ripples. The dorsal surface has three deep scars forming a prominent ridge. This is probably a core rejuvenation flake. The flake weighs 3.39g and measures 34.3mm long, 16.64mm wide and 7.49mm thick. This is probably a core rejuvenation flake dating to the Neolithic to early Bronze Age (-2500 to -1500).

Flint end scraper dating from the Neolithic – Early Bronze Age. The flint is pale-mid grey with a small patch of cortex at the butt where it has been struck from the core. The tool is roughly tear shaped; the wide rounded end is finely worked into a scraping tool on the dorsal face. There is some further retouch down the left and right dorsal edges but this does not appear to be for use as a scraping edge. The scraper weighs 7.66g and measures 40.41mm in length, 23mm in width and 7.88mm in thickness.

Flint end scraper dating to the Neolithic – Early Bronze Age. The flint is honey coloured with a small patch of cortex at the distal end of the ventral face. The tool is roughly oval in shape; unusually, the curved proximal end (as opposed to the distal end) of the dorsal surface bears the fine retouch forming the scraping edge. The ventral face has a bulb of percussion at the proximal end and terminates in a hinge fracture at the distal end. The scraper weighs 4.26g and measures 27.03mm in length, 20.19mm in width and 8.36mm in thickness.

Long worked flint blade dating to the Mesolithic period. The blade is mid-brown in colour and displays a double dorsal ridge. There is some fine retouch along the left dorsal edge. The left ventral edge also has some fine retouch in a localised area which has created a small semi-circular notch about a third of the way up the edge from the proximal end. The piece has been labelled by the finder and has a shiny fixative on the ventral face. The blade measures 60.1mm in length, 14.3mm in width and 6.86mm in thickness.

Flint scraper dating from the late Neolithic - Early Bronze Age. The scraper is semi-circular in shape with a finely retouched section of curved edge on the dorsal face. The scraper appears to have been broken so that part is missing – this may be plough damage. There is a patch of cortex on the dorsal face at the butt. The ventral surface shows the bulb of percussion with ripples radiating from this point across the surface. There is no retouch on the ventral surface. The scraper weighs 3.87g and measures 24.9mm in length, 15.7mm in width and 9.3mm in thickness.

End and side scraper probably dating to the Early Bronze Age. The scraper is oval shaped and the dorsal face has been worked almost across the whole surface. The retouch is continuous around the edge of the tool. The ventral surface shows a pronounced bulb of percussion with ripples radiating from this point across the surface. There is no retouch on the ventral surface. The scraper weighs 8.86g and measures 31.8mm in length, 22.8mm in width and 10.3mm in thickness.
