Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A modestly retouched flint flake of general prehistoric date, but probably Neolithic or Bronze Age in date (c. 4000-1400 BC). Plano-convex in form, the dorsal surface has a single ridge running from just behind the distal point to the proximal end. The ventral surface is smooth apart from a modest percussion wave and some slight flaking. There are signs of retouch to both the left and right hand distal edges. This implement is modestly worked, sufficient to make it practically useful. The surface is a mottled grey with inclusions and ferrous like staining, some of the crazing/chips…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete flint barbed and tanged arrowhead dating to the early Bronze Age (c. 2150-1500 BC). The arrowhead has been formed on a piece of light pink / buff flint (heavily calcified) suggesting a chalk downland source. The arrowhead is roughly triangular in form although the point is missing and there is damage to one side. The tangs are very short (undeveloped) and uneven. The arrowhead has extensive bifacial flake removals on all surfaces.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint leaf-shaped arrowhead dating to the early Neolithic period. The arrowhead is formed from a piece of mottled blue/ grey flint which has a heavily calcified outer surface, suggesting a chalk downland source. The arrowhead has been extensively retouched on both ventral and dorsal face, with some post-depositional damage evident. At the proximal end of the arrowhead there is the impression of notching on either edge, which may indicate the beginnings of the creation of a tang, however the surfaces in this area are not consistent with the rest of the arrowhead and these notches are…

A broadly leaf-shaped flint flake formed from a grey/blue flint with thick outer calcification. The flake has not been retouched and shows scars from previous removals on the dorsal surface only. The bulb of percussion is retained. A small hinge fracture can be seen on the lower left lateral of the dorsal side. General prehistoric date but probably Neolithic - Bronze Age, c. 4000-1400 BC.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Probably late Neolithic or Bronze Age flake fragment or debitage dating from c. 4000-1000BC. The flake is white in colour and the flint is heavily patinated. It is of triangular shape - it used to be longer but snapped and only the lower section survives. Possibly a primary waste flake that was reused as a knife or scraper: it shows retouch along the lower edge.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A transverse or oblique arrowhead dating to the later Neolithic period (c. 4000-2350 BC). Made from a light grey and white flint (tertiary flake), covering scalar retouch leaves distinction between dorsal and ventral faces uncertain. There is also post-depositional damage on both surfaces and all edges. The colour of the flint and the white patina suggests a chalk downland source for the raw material. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2700-2350 BC.

Two flint debitage fragments, waste flakes from flint tool production. Both flakes are small and bladelet-like in form. The orange coloured flake retains the platform and bulb of percussion and has evidence of previous removals on its dorsal surface. The second flake, also a tertiary removal, is grey in colour and has evidence of previous removals on its dorsal side, but does not retain the platform or bulb and has suffered post-depositional damage. Although hard to date accurately, these flakes are likely to date from the Mesolithic to Neolithic period, c. 8000-2400 BC.

A flint nose scraper on a plunging blade from a double platformed core, therefore of Mesolithic or Neolithic date (c. 8000-2400 BC). The object is formed on a tertiary flake of a mottled grey flint. There are three, if not more, two-directional removals visible on the dorsal surface; although neither platform survives, this is indicitive of a double platformed core. The thinner distal end has some fine soft hammer retouch on its tip which has lead to its identification as a nose scraper, however this may also have been the result of removal or preperation of the platform. This is prob…

A complete flint end-scraper of probable Neolithic or Bronze Age date. The scraper has been manufactured on a tertiary flint flake that is dark bluish black in colouration, with small white inclusions and demonstrating little evidence of patination. The original support was probably detached by hard hammer percussion, and a single negative removal is visible on the dorsal surface. The platform is sub-lenticular in shape and plain, showing no evidence of trimming or preparation. On the ventral side, a bulbar scar of small size is visible. The support is somewhat irregular in shape w…

Two brokens flakes from flint working debris (debitage). The first is the distal end of a flake from a multi-platformed core, with the proximal end now broken and missing. This tertiary flake is a dark grey-brown in colour. The second piece is also a broken distal fragment of a flake, this time a secondary flake retaining c. 20% cortex along the right edge. This flint is a dark brown colour with creamy cortex. Both pieces are prehistoric in date with the first flake being of probable Neolithic date while the second cannot be dated more closely than Neolithic to Early Bronze Age. They …

Three pieces of flint working debitage, or 'flakes' of later prehistoric date. Fragment no.1 is broadly triangular in plan and retains c.15% cortex on one edge. The flake has a shallow bulb and has sharp and jagged edges. It is a mottled grey-blue in colour with lighter, almost milky outer surface. Fragment no. 2 is a complete flake retaining the bulb and part of the platform. There is a small area (c.15%) of cortex on one side of the distal dorsal surface with a hinge fracture at the base. This flint is a light brown in colour and semi-translucent. The third fragment is a thick, amor…
