Object type: BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A incomplete late Neolithic / Bronze Age tanged and barbed arrowhead. The arrowhead is long and slender having been finely worked bifacially. The tang is pointed and again worked bifacially. The tip of the arrowhead is missing but otherwise it is a very well made and well preserved object with no indication of post-depositional damage. Arrowheads of this type are not a common find; those more often found are usually short and squat.

Object type: POLISHED AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete flint? polished axehead dating to the Neolithic period (c. 4000-2500 BC). The axe is in very good condition and is of high quality. The stone is a mottled light grey and mid brown colour. The axe has side facets and a thin butt. It has been polished all over and the cutting edge has been resharpened and re-polished in antiquity after being damaged. An area of damage on one side was caused by the finder hitting it with a pickaxe when it was discovered some c. 60 years ago. This is a very nice example of a Neolithic polished axe.

Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A lower palaeolithic handaxe, dating from c. 476,000 - 421,000 BC. The handaxe has been made of a flint nodule that has a greyish-white outer colouring, likely to be from a chalk downlands source. Dating from the Anglian phase of the Lower Palaeolithic, c. 478,000 to 423,000 years ago, the hand axe has bifacial removals made using a hard hammer, such as another stone. Although the hand axe has some post-depositional damage and iron staining, it survives in very good condition. Based on the location of discovery this hand axe probably derived from the Caversham Channel, an ancient rout…

A retouched secondary flake, possibly a horseshoe scraper with retouch visible on both the dorsal and ventral sides. The tool appears to have battered edges all around it. This tool measures 30.20mm long, 20.87mm wide and is 8.12mm thick. It weighs 6.9gms.

A collection of 89 flint debitage pieces of varying size, shape and colour, dating from the Mesolithic to Neolithic period (c. 10,000 - 2350 BC). The collection consists of flakes and blade-like pieces and chunks, mostly undiagnostic but considering the rest of the assemblage probably of Mesolithic or Neolithic date. Most of the pieces are made on a blue-grey flint, some with white or grey patina. Cortex survives on about 10% of the pieces. These objects are part of a larger collection from what appears to be a multiphase site.

A frgament from a Neolithic polished flint axehead dating from c.4000-2100 BC. Polished axes are very labour intensive and are thought to have held high value during this period. Polished axes were traded throughout Britain and Western Europe. In this example only the tip survives. The flint is covered in thick white patina suggesting a chalk downland source. It measures 43.79mm long, 42.43mm wide and is 22.84mm thick. It weighs 39.8 gms.

Four bladelet cores dating to the Mesolithic period (c. 10,000-4,000 BC). Three out of the four cores appear complete; one has suffered post-depositional damage. The three complete examples all have flat platforms and multiple single direction bladelet removals. The cores are worked in such a way as to create a cone-shaped core. The removals are long and thin, producing bladelets that could be fashioned into other tools, such as microliths. Three out of the four cores, including the damaged one, have some element of cortex remaining. These objects are part of a larger collection fr…

There are definately two platforms visible, however removals seem to have been made from other places too as there are several multi-directional removals over the surfaces. C. 4000-2350 BC). A fragment of a flint knife of later Neolithic date (c. 2700-2350 BC). The fragment is the tip of the knife, which would have been plano-convex in section. Parallel soft hammer retouch is restricted to the left lateral of the dorsal surface. The knife has been made on a tertiary flake of grey-brown flint. This object is part of a larger collection from what appears to be a multiphase site.

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A flint blade with miscellanous retouching on both ventral and dorsal surfaces. The retouched flake has been formed from a light grey-brown tertiary flake. The blade retains the platform and bulb of percussion. Fine parallel soft-hammer retouch is evident around the distal end, qhich is quite square - it maybe that this flake was intended to be a formal tool or arrowhead but was rejected or discarded. This retouched flake probably belongs to the Neolithic or Bronze Age period (c. 4000-1100 BC). This object is part of a larger collection from what appears to be a multiphase site.

An incomplete post-medieval gunflint, made from a dark brown/black tertiary flint flake. The gunflint is broadly wedge-shaped in section and would have been square or rectangular in plan before the post-depositional damage. The gunflake has retouch around all extant edges, the retouch being hard and direct with a scaled appearance. The wedge end of the gunflint is completely retouched, however the dorsal back surface is unworked. Gunflint like these are known from both English and later American Civil War sites and are thought to have been issued during the AD 1650-1660s, possibly alo…

A blade-like flake, possibly a core rejuvination flake (debitage) dating to the prehistoric period, possibly the Mesolithic period. The secondary flake is made on a brown flint with the lateral edges showing some recortication. There are several long thin removals on the dorsal side. There is a post-depositional break at the proximal end which has removed any evidence of the bulb or platform, although some radiating fracture lines can be seen. This flake was probably struck with a soft hammer (bone). The flake is not particularly diagnostic and although the long thin removals suggest …

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete flint, partially ground and polished axehead head dating to the Neolithic period. The axe head is made from a whitish-coloured flint. It has rough bifacial removals with the rounded butt of the axe ground smooth and polished on either face. It is unclear whether this is an unfinished polished axe, or whether the restricted area that is ground and polished was intentional. Polished axes are characteristic of the Neolithic period; this specimen is likely to date to the Late Neolithic, c. 2700-2300 BC.
