Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two pieces of flint tool manufacturing waste (debitage), made from a semi-translucent orange-brown flint. Both flakes show flake removal scars on their dorsal surfaces, and neither appear to have any retouch. Undiagnostic pieces like these are very hard to date, however they are likely to date from around the Neolithic period.

A blade-like flake, possibly a core rejuvination flake (debitage) dating to the prehistoric period, possibly the Mesolithic period. The secondary flake is made on a brown flint with the lateral edges showing some recortication. There are several long thin removals on the dorsal side. There is a post-depositional break at the proximal end which has removed any evidence of the bulb or platform, although some radiating fracture lines can be seen. This flake was probably struck with a soft hammer (bone). The flake is not particularly diagnostic and although the long thin removals suggest …

Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An un-retouched flint flake (debitage), struck from a core and showing previous flake scars on the dorsal surface. There is no evidence for retouching or further work on either edge and the bulb is retained. This may be a preparation or rejuvenation piece. Generally prehistoric in date (non-diagnostic), but more likely to be later Neolithic or Bronze Age in date (c. 3000-900 BC).

Object type: MACE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A possible flint pebble mace head dating from the Neolithic period. The central hole is straight rather than hour-glass shaped - the use of a bow drill (a laborious task through flint) would produce a straight perforation, but this may also be a pebble with a natural hole; if found objects with naturally occurring perforations were utilised by prehistoric man. The nose or tip of the possible mace head shows limited evidence of impact. This possible mace head measures 66.13mm long, 57.81mm wide and is 34.47mm deep. The hole is 20.20mm in diameter and the object weighs 198.5gms.

A sub-circular shaped side scraper made on a secondary flake of grey-brown flint. The striking platform is identifiable and the bulb is present on the ventral surface. The retouch is restricted to one dorsal lateral. This scraper measures 33.84mm long, 28.69mm wide and is 8.75mm thick. It weighs 10.4gms and probably dates from the Neolithic period.

A late Mesolithic / late Neolithic horseshoe-type scraper made on a secondary flake. The retouch is restricted to the dorsal surface and the flint is a blue-grey in colour, suggesting a chalk-downland / clay-with-flints source. Modern plough damage has removed part of the nose of the scraper. This scraper may date more closely to the late Mesolithic / early Neolithic period, and measures 48.05mm long, 26.99mm wide and 9.80mm thick. It weighs 14.4gms.

A complete flint, partially ground and polished axehead head dating to the Neolithic period. The axe head is made from a whitish-coloured flint. It has rough bifacial removals with the rounded butt of the axe ground smooth and polished on either face. It is unclear whether this is an unfinished polished axe, or whether the restricted area that is ground and polished was intentional. Polished axes are characteristic of the Neolithic period; this specimen is likely to date to the Late Neolithic, c. 2700-2300 BC.

A blade-like flake, possibly a core rejuvination flake (debitage) dating to the prehistoric period. The secondary flake is made on a mottled blue-brown flint with the lateral edges showing some recortication. There are several long thin removals on the dorsal sidem and the ventral side retains the platform and small bulb of percussion, which indiates that the flake was struck with a soft hammer (bone). The flake is not particularly diagnostic so a wide date range of Mesolithic to (early) Bronze Age must be used.
