A lower palaeolithic handaxe, dating from c. 476,000 - 421,000 BC. The handaxe has been made of a flint nodule that has a greyish-white outer colouring, likely to be from a chalk downlands source. Dating from the Anglian phase of the Lower Palaeolithic, c. 478,000 to 423,000 years ago, the hand axe has bifacial removals made using a hard hammer, such as another stone. Although the hand axe has some post-depositional damage and iron staining, it survives in very good condition. Based on the location of discovery this hand axe probably derived from the Caversham Channel, an ancient rout…

A complete but slightly damaged struck flint end and side scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC). The scraper is broadly D-shaped in pland and section and is formed on a tertiary flake of mottled light and dark grey flint; flake scars on the dorsal surface show previous removals. The platform has suffered post-depositional (weathering) damage and most of the bulb scar has been removed / is missing, however the percussion lines are retained on the ventral side. The dorsal surface bares soft-hammer retouch along c.60% of the left lateral, irregularly around t…

A complete struck flint horseshoe scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC). The scraper is broad and sub-rectangular in plan and sub-oval shape in profile with a D-shaped section. The scraper is formed on a tertiary flake of dark grey flint with the nose of the scaper located at the ventral end. The platform has therefore been removed however percussion lines are evident on the ventral surface. There is also a hinge-like fracture at the distal end. The dorsal surface bares invasive, stepped, semi-abrupt retouch around the curved lateral and proximal edges; th…

A piece of flint debitage in the form of a blade of probable later Mesolithic to Neolithic date (c. 8000 - 3000 BC). The flake retains the bulb of percussion. The flint is a mottled grey to grey-brown in colour. Uncertain prehistoric date.

Two unretouched flint blades (production debitage) of later prehistoric date, probably Mesolithic or Neolithic (c. 8000-3000 BC). Both blades retain their bulbs of percussion, platform and show radiating fracture lines. Several previous removals, suggestive of bladelet / microlith production (Mesolithic), are visible as flake scars. One piece of debitage retains 33% cortex, the other is a tertiary piece.
