A small ovate flint handaxe of lower Paleolithic date (500,000-180,000 BC), 95mm in length and of Wymer (1999) Type K. The handaxe is struck from a pale orange-brown flint with cream coloured patination from post depositional exposure to chalky soils. The object is worked with soft-hammered removals across both faces; the cross section is roughly lenticular, but with an asymmetrical lump to one side.

A complete Lower Palaeolithic Acheulean bifaced flint hand axe dating c. 500000-190000 BC.
The axehead has been worked on all sides with one region of thin pebble cortex being visible on one of the wide faces. This is a cream colour with occasional iron staining There are patches of cortex like cream coloured material on other faces which may be imperfections in the flint. The flint is mostly an off white colour with dark grey patches and occasional iron staining
The axe is triangular in plan with a rounded butt and well formed rounded point. It is broad…

An incomplete flint handaxe of lower Paleolithic date (500,000-180,000 BC). The tool is of elongated ovate form, 140mm in length and most likely of Wymer (1999) Type K. It has a thick (48mm) cross section and is struck from a dark grey-brown flint, with light brown to buff-coloured patination typical of deposition in glacial outwash sand and gravel terrace deposits in southern England. The tool is bifacially worked with soft hammer flaking; recent and unpatinated post-depositional damage is evident from the broken off tip and a potlid fracture on one …

A lower palaeolithic handaxe, dating from c. 476,000 - 421,000 BC. The handaxe has been made of a flint nodule that has a greyish-white outer colouring, likely to be from a chalk downlands source. Dating from the Anglian phase of the Lower Palaeolithic, c. 478,000 to 423,000 years ago, the hand axe has bifacial removals made using a hard hammer, such as another stone. Although the hand axe has some post-depositional damage and iron staining, it survives in very good condition. Based on the location of discovery this hand axe probably derived from the Caversham Channel, an ancient rout…

A probable Middle Palaeolithic handaxe. The handaxe is incomplete and was probably broken during manufacture or use, while one small area of more modern damage is evident. The handaxe is bifacially retouched, and a creamy grey core is covered by a thick orange patina, suggesting a gravel bed context or source, such as those known from Cassington, Oxon. The Devensian period at Cassington is well attested from evidence gained during gravel extractions. The period here dates from c.75,000BC to 35,000BC but this find is likely to have been redeposited from an earlier layer. The handaxe me…
