Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Cordate flint handaxe of Palaeolithic date (800,000 - 40,000 BC). The Axe has convex sides and the butt-end is wider than the cutting-end. It has a pointed oval cross section. The flint is dark orange in colour with no cortext remaining. The flint has a glossy patina. The implement has been bifacially worked, both faces appearing to have had equal work with all over with multi-directional flake removals, tending towards the edges.
The hand axe is 74.9mm long, 51.3mm wide, 25.1mm thick and weighs 105.36 grams.

Object type: PICK
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Published
A tranchet axe knapped from light grey flint, dating to the Mesolithic period (or earlier Neolithic period). The axe has a well defined cutting edge, which shows little sign of wear. Invasive removals cover the ventral surface of the flint, and there are long removals at the proximal end to sharpen the pick to a point (the tranchet technique used to remove sharpening flakes). The flint is unpatinated and has some post-depositional damage due to agricultural activity (chipped edges due to rolling in the ploughsoil). The dimensions are 125.94mm long, 41.82mm wide, 35.59mm thick and weigh…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Prehistoric probably late Neolithic- Early Bronze Age. Sub-triangular, convex/convex medium size, knapped, variable stripy grey/pale grey tertiary debitage. Bulb of percussion with large platform-formed by a hard hammer and some force with feint conchoidal ripple marks and a prominent stepped distal hinge fracture. There are two main flake beds on the dorsal surface with negative ripples. There are a number of relatively recent edge chips due to agricultural machinery damage rather than retouch. This is likely to date between 2500-1500BC. Ref. Detector Finds 5, Gordon B…

Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An ovate flint core tool (tranchet axehead or pick) of suspected Mesolithic date 120mm in length, knapped from a dark grey flint with a thick white patina showing recortication from prolonged exposure to calcareous sediments. The cross section is roughly symmetrical and sub oval in shape and the butt is narrowed and flat. There are two tranchet removals at the cutting edge on one face, one of which ends in a hinge fracture. The other face has a number of smaller removals providing a curved edge. Overall the distal tip has a pointed shape and an asymmetrical chi…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint scraper of uncertain age and unclassified type, likely Mesolithic to early Bronze Age (9000-1000BC)
Description: The scraper is formed from a half crescent shaped secondary flake, with a blunted point (the striking platform). The tool is roughly triangular in cross-section. Invasive semi-abrupt retouch has occurred on the outer edge, creating a crude saw edge. The inside edge has short scaled abrupt retouch. The flint is mid grey-brown with some brighter mottling.
Measurements: The object is 49.93mm long, 22.41mm wide, 5.01mm thick and 5.11g in weight.

Object type: BORER
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete flint borer of Mesolithic date (c. 9000-3500 BC).
Description: The lithic is sub-triangular in plan and concavo-convex in section. The left hand side of the dorsal surface contains a small number of short, parallel removals done at a semi-abrupt angle. The distal end appears to have been abruptly blunted with a worked point for boring. The ventral surface is concave with ripples of percussion emanating from the proximal end. There are shallow flakes situated along the proximal and right hand edges. The lithic retains no cortex and is therefore a tertiary flak…

A flint scraper of likely late Neolithic - early Bronze age (3300 - 1000 BC) date.
Description: The scraper is formed from a tertiary flake with a low bulb of percussion on the ventral face and heavily pronounced conchoidal rippling. Scaled semi-abrupt retouch can be seen along half the length of one edge abutting the striking platform. The flint is dark brown fading to light at the edges.
Measurements: The object is 53.18mm long, 26.94mm wide, 5.9mm thick and 8.17g in weight.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A rounded flint scraper likely of Neolithic date (c.4000-2000 BC).
Description: The scraper is roughly teardrop shaped with a long rounded and wide unworked ventral face. The bulb of percussion and conchoidal scarring (rippling) on the ventral face is quite pronounced which suggests hard hammer technology, usually associated with flint technology of the Palaeolithic and after the middle of the Neolithic. The majority of the edge has short, scaled semi-abrupt retouch struck from the dorsal face. The flint is opaque mid-brown and beige, quite mottled.

County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete flint barbed and tanged arrowhead of probably early Bronze Age date.
Description: Made from a mid grey-brown flint. The arrowhead is triangular with a slightly squared tang and slightly curved barbs (one is squared off, possibly from a break), the other rounded at the end. Both faces have covering scaled low angle retouch.
Dimensions: length 29.07mm, width 21.35, thickness 3.94mm, weight 1.96g
Notes: Similar flint barb and tanged arrowheads are associated with the Beaker phase of the Late / final Neolithic and Early Bronze Age c. 2500 BC-1500 BC.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A single flint probable waste flake (debitage) of uncertain prehistoric date.
Description: The flake is roughly teardrop shaped with a wide base and striking platform. Clear conchoidal rippling and bulb of percussion, partly obscured by patination. Little evidence of secondary working or retouching. The heavy patination leaves the flake a white colour, suggesting the flint has been in the soil for a long time.
Measurements: 43.01mm long, 28.77mm wide, 7.28mm thick and 8g in weight.
