Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Pale grey flint with misty patina patches, possible transverse arrowhead. Sub-triangular flake of thin lentoid section. The dorsal side bears covering scalar retouch entailing the trimming of a few large thin flakes; the dorsal side bears a low bulb at one corner, trimmed by very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect and here interpreted as the butt end of the arrowhead. The cutting edge is broken, probably recently. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2700-2350 BC.

Object type: TRANSVERSE ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hertfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete flint transverse arrowhead, dating from the Late Neolithic.
The remaining piece is sub-trapezoidal, with a break having occurred at the wider end. The arrowhead has been made from a tertiary flake or blade and has been formed by long, sub-parallel, semi-abrupt retouch, with areas of short, abrupt retouch, including at the narrow end, which has been blunted to aid hafting. The heavily recorticated, white surface is indicative of deposition within an alkaline environment.
Length: 27.8mm; width: 18.9mm; thickness: 5.3mm. Weight: 2.61g.

Pale semi-translucent flint transverse arrowhead, as kindly identified by the finder. Small flake with long parallel flakes removed from the dorsal side and with a bulb on the ventral, the working of the two sides being at right angles. Short abrupt retouch, probably a single impact, has trimmed what is here taken as the cutting edge of the arrowhead. The projectile must have received nearly all its effect from the combined power of bow and weight of the arrow shaft behind this lightweight head. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2700-2350 BC.

Pale grey flint with patches of cloudy patina possible transverse arrowhead, as kindly identified by the finder. Irregular flake with flakes removed from opposite directions on its dorsal side and with a low bulb on the ventral. A chip at one corner of the putative arrowhead may detract from what was already a fairly irregular form. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2700-2350 BC.

Grey flint with cortex spot and misty white patina patches transverse or oblique arrowhead. Triangular flake with broad parallel flakes removed from its dorsal side and with a bulb on the ventral. Grey flint with patches of misty white patina transverse or oblique arrowhead. Sub-triangular flake with an indented cutting edge, of which one corner projects forward of the rest. Covering scalar retouch leaves distinction between dorsal and ventral faces uncertain. The extent of patina may suggest this object was exposed to weathering for a period after its deposition. A flint transverse arrowhead dating from the Late Neolithic period (3300 BC - 2200 BC). The arrowhead is formed on a flake of mottled grey flint. It is sub-triangular in plan and a thin pointed oval in section. The striking platform occupies one side, the original edge of the flake is the long transverse cutting edge and the final side is retouched with short sub-parallel abrutp removals. A speckled patina has started to form. A notch in the cutting edge interrupts this, suggesting it is later damage. The arrowhead is 22.4mm long, 15.2mm wide and 3mm thick. 0.85g.

A chisel arrowhead of large size; perhaps having a different use or being 'for show' but without gloss or damage to indicate any function. The plan is triangular. The small striking platform facet is extant on the right margin next to the sharp unmodified forward edge. The bulb of percussion is visible on the ventral surface of the soft hammer struck flake. Fine grey bown flint with large opaque cream inclusions was chosen and the big trimmed flake indicates that larger imported resources of Devon nodular flint may have been used rather than local beach pebbles. The flake blank has be…

A transverse or petit tranchet arrowhead from a source of fine grey brown and opaque cream flint. The flake blank may have been just small enough to have been from a local beach pebble, but larger nodules were also used from Devon. The ventral surface is unmodified, unlike a chisel arrowhead and shows expanding ripples from a striking platform close to the edge of the arrowhead plan. The striking platform and bulb of percussion have been removed by an unexpected abruptly worked notch into the right edge of the plan where the free sharp edge meets the shoulder. The opposite edge is mor…

A Transverse and chisel arrowhead worked on a flake of fine dark brown flint with small opaque cream inclusions. Before removal of the arrowhead blank, parallel flakes were removed that had the proximal ends of their negative scars truncated by the transverse removal forming the wide sharp, straight forward edge of the arrowhead. The proximal and distal ends of the flake blank were flaked away to leave symmetrical concave tapered blunt edges down to the tang using bifacial semi-abrupt retouch.
There does seem to be a concentration of mostly undamaged often transverse arrowheads at …

A flint transversarrowhead of Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (about 4000 BC - 1000 BC). The arrowhead is of a type once thought to have been used to stun prey rather than to kill it. It is formed on patinated mottled flint. It is a long flake which is rounded at the narrow proximal end, and square at the wider distal end. The proximal end has short, sub-parallel semi-abrupt retouch which forms the blunt point of the arrowhead. There is also short, abrupt, sub-parallel retouch on both long edges as well as an area of damage which interrupts the patination on the right side. The fli…

Blue grey flint with misty patina patchestransverse arrowhead. A four-sided flake with broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and slightly convex on the ventral. Invasive scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect is restricted to one side of the arrowhead. Both this and the initial trimming were executed in the same direction, diagonally across the arrowhead as viewed [and used]. This is a fairly heavy example. The extent of patina suggests the object was subject to a period of weathering after its loss or deposition. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2700-2350 BC.

Grey flint with cortex and thick milky patina possible transverse arrowhead. Flake with cortex trimmed from its dorsal side and along a putative cutting edge, and with faint ripples on a near-flat ventral surface. Short scalar retouch executed follows the curved edge, with either damage or very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect; the retouch has disrupted the patina. This object appears to have been made from a weathered fragment of debitage. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2700-2350 BC.

Probably a transverse arrowhead, translucent brown in colour, bi-facially retouched and expediently made.
The cutting edge exhibits discontinuous edge retouch of low angle. The medial ridge has been worked and thinned to give a more distinctive and functional projectile form.
There is extensive spalling on the ventral face.
Butler (2005) illustrates a similar piece on p161, fig 67, 13.
