Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published
An incomplete probable tranchet type axehead of Mesolithic date (8300-4500 BC), missing both butt and cutting end. It measures 74.68x39.60x23.57mm and weighs 66.5g.
The flint surface has 100% patination with iron staining along the arises. In cross-section the axehead is lentoid and both faces have large flake scars. An areas of cortex is visible on one face only. The breaks at either end are ancient and display patination to a lesser extent than the rest of the surface. Recent plough damage shows a dark grey flint underneath.
One face has an area of possible polishing, suggesting…

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A complete Late Mesolithic flint tranchet axehead dating to c.8000 - 4000 BC.
The axehead is made of a medium grey flint that is light grey in parts with frequent mottled white inclusions and banding of lighter and darker grey. It has a semi-glossy patina. One surface retains thin chalky white pebble cortex on about one fifth of its surface.
The implement has relatively parallel sides which widen slightly towards the blade edge and narrowing slightly to a wide rounded point at its opposite edge. It has a lozenge shaped cross-section for most of its length baring the blade edge w…

Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Published
A Mesolithic (8300-4500 BC) flint tranchet axehead, measuring 136.59x45.52x30.83mm and weighing 190.02g.
The axehead is plano-convex in form and struck from a low-grade, browny-orange flint with less-silicious patches and thick cortex (which makes it difficult to flake). The cutting edge is rather more diagonally-flaked than transversely-flaked.
The axehead is roughly struck with large flake scars. The sides and butt-end are steeply flaked.

Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint tranchet axehead from the early Mesolithic period (c.9000 - 8000 BC). The flint is a dark brownish-grey and fairly opaque with elements of the cortex visible. The axe is crudely worked, with a rounded cutting edge, roughly parallel sides and a pointed butt. It has a broadly triangular cross-section. The flint appears to be in the second stage of being worked due to the patches of cortex on its butt and and its ventral and dorsal faces. Also, a soft hammering technique seems to have been used, identifiable by the weak ripple marks and low bulbs of percussion. The broad shape of…

County: Wiltshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint tranchet axehead of Mesolithic date, 131.4 mm in length and made from a pale grey flint. The object is narrow, with parallel sides and a lozengiform cross section, with flake removals across all sides. The proximal end is rounded and the axehead tapers to a narrower distal end which has a cutting edge with a steep wedge-shaped profile, which appears to have been resharpened and has damage possibly from usage. There is a patch of buff coloured cortex on one face. The surface shows heavy white patination from proloned exposure to calcareous sediments.
