Record ID: WMID-52AA34
Object type: WORKED OBJECT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint of probable Neolithic date. The flint is sub-triangular in shape and resembles an arrowhead in shape. However, the flint has no invasive retouch and it retains the bulb of percussion and striking platform, a very unusual feature in Neolithic or Bronze Age arrowheads as the bulb of percussion is normally removed to facilitate hafting. The 'arrowhead' shape therefore seems likely to be coincidence rather than design. Very fine possible retouch resembling a saw blade may have been applied to both lateral edges, although it is possible that this has been caused during use …

Object type: WORKED OBJECT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A piece of chert, possibly worked. If it has been knapped from a core, it does not appear to have been retouched subsequently. The object does not have any of the clear hallmarks of human intervention - it does not have a clear bulb of percussion or striking platform. What appears at first to be retouch on the lateral edges may actually be natural damage and wear. The chert has a pale brown colour. Find not photographed.

Object type: TRANSVERSE ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Staffordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A transverse arrowhead, probably of petit tranchet type (length: 20mm; width: 18mm; thickness: 6mm; weight: 2.02g). The narrower end is what the shaft would have been connected. There has been extensively knapping on all three sides apart from the narrow end to create a sharp edge. There are three principal types defined as transverse arrowheads defined by typological analysis. These are the petit tranchet, chisel and oblique types. It is uncertain when petit tranchets were first manufactured in Britain. Some may perhaps date to the Mesolithic period, but most of the Mesolithic site…

A probable transverse arrowhead of grey-green translucent flint. Late Neolithic dating (3300 BC to 2200 BC). The arrowhead is triangular in shape, with a sub-rectangular cross section. Conchoidal ripples are present on the ventral face. Retouch is present along both side edges, on both faces. The retouch can be classified as short, sub-parallel and abrupt. The arrowhead measures 31.5 mm in length with a maximum width of 22.7 mm. It is 6.1 mm thick and weighs 3.5 g.

Flint thumbnail scraper made from a flake and dating to the late Neolithic - Early Bronze Age. The scraper is sub-oval in shape with a finely retouched curved edge on the dorsal face. There is a small patch of cortex on the dorsal face and a V shaped butt area where the original flake was struck off the core. The ventral surface has a pronounced bulb of percussion with ripples radiating from this point across the surface. There is no retouch on the ventral surface. The scraper weighs 3.57g and measures 23.4mm in length, 19.4mm in width and 7.78mm in thickness.

A complete knapped flint thumbnail scraper, formed on a flake, dating to the late Neolithic – Early Bronze Age, between 3000 – 1800 BC (length: 23mm; width: 20mm; thickness: 5.5mm; weight: 3.2g). On the ventral side of the scraper, there is a bulb of percussion with an eraillure scar and ripples or ‘lunettes’ radiating down and outwards from the feature. On the dorsal side, there are three main arrises with retouched edges to the left and top of the artefact. The retouched edge on thumbnail scrapers tends to be around the circumference, o near total edge, of the flake blank.…

A thumbnail scraper of later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date (2300 -1800BC). The scraper is formed on a fine, mid grey / black coloured good quality, tertiary flake of flint. The ventral face shows the bulb scar and point of percussion as well as conchoidal ripples; the prepared platform has been removed by subsequent flaking. The dorsal face has several removals / flake facets. These are most dense around the edge where a series of neat regular well applied secondary retouch can be seen. This has been well applied and forms a slightly serrated cutting / scraping edge that extends …

An incomplete bifacially worked fragment of a flint Sickle of Neolithic dating (circa 4000 BC - 2351 BC). The fragment is broadly sub-triangular in shape, and broadly lentoid (lozenge) shaped in cross section. The fragment comes from towards the tip of the sickle, however the actual tip and the base are now missing. The flint is white and grey in colour with the tip in a brown colour. The fragment has a bowed curved edge. Both the ventral and dorsal faces of the flake have been reworked. This secondary reworking is best seen on the curved edge where detailed neat small flakes have…

A prehistoric flint object, probably a Neolithic or Bronze Age scraper. The flint appears to have a bulb of percussion and bulb scar at the proximal end, and retouch has been applied to the distal end, applied from both ventral and dorsal faces. The flint is a cream to grey colour with ochre brown in places. The flint is not clearly diagnostic of a closely defined prehistoric period, and is likely to be Neolithic or Bronze Age in date, dating from circa 4000 to 1500 BC. If more diagnostic artefacts were recovered from the same area, this might allow suggestion of a more closely define…
