This is an amorphous irregular flint core, probably of Neolithic origin from the Walton Basin in Wales. One side is cortex with the other exhibiting various striking platforms and removal scars to the face. The material appears to be chert with a dark grey core and a light grey surface that may have resulted from exposure to fire.

Multi faceted core which has been worked in several directions from opposing striking platforms to produce small blades or microliths of late Mesolithic date (6500-3500 BC).. The core is probably derived from a riverine pebble and a small area of outer cortex is present on one face. Two striking platforms are present from which blades have been removed, one of these has a series of hinge fractures associated with it and it is suggested that this may be the older face. It seems that the core has not been rejuvenated and instead blades have been taken in a separate direction. The cor…

An irregular chunk of flint that has been irregularly kanpped, possibly being used as a crude core in the Later Mesolithic or Neolithic period (4000 - 3000 BC). All of the cortex (outer rind) has been removed. There are two potential striking platforms, with flint facets (long parallel scars). Post depositional damage is present with many small, uncontrolled scars present, probably the result of plough roll. The flint measures 32.09mm length, 36.39mm width, 26.76mm thick and weighs 40.6 grams.

One irregular flint core used for the production of blades of later Mesolithic or Neolithic period (4000 - 3000 BC). The flint demonstrates an area of cortex (outer rind) present, which covers less than 50% of the surface. There are a number of uncontrolled fractures and evidence of plough roll. It is a mid grey colour. It measures 34.81mm length, 23.50mm width, 23.70mm thick and weighs 18.5 grams.

An irregular fragment of a flint core, used for the production of blades of Mesolithic date (6500 - 3500 BC). It is sub square in plan and D shaped in cross section. One striking platform appears to be present but the core fragment has suffered badly from movement in the soil and plough roll, as there are a significant number of uncontrolled flaking scars present. It is dark grey in colour and a small amount of cortex (outer rind) is present on the distal end of the fragment. It measures 25.32mm length, 29.51mm width, 13.79mm thick and weighs 11.1 grams.

This is possibly a Neolithic flint core. One side is 'ventral like' being flat and smooth but with no evidence of ripple, the other is 'dorsal' in form with some ripple and dorsal scarring. One side of the dorsal ridge is smooth, whilst the other has multiple fractures with no distinctive sign of retouch removal or the typical conchoidal scarring so often found with worked pieces. The 'dorsal' side also has cortex in situ to both ends and what might be seen as the proximal end, has a platform. There are two distinct miss-strike scars to the larger of the cortex faces. Directly b…

Large flint core / primary flaked nodule of probable Neolithic date, The core is formed on a poor quality nodule of flint which has a large amount of cortex and dark grey coloured inclusions. The surface also has significant areas of multiple holes/depressions. The core has 2 primary bulbs of percussion and may have been discarded as being of too low grade for further working. A Neolithic date 2900 - 1800 BC may be suggested as similar dated debitage and tools have been found in the immidiate vicinity. The discovery of such large pieces of unworked / unprocessed flint is highly …

A pyramidal shaped core dating to the Mesolithic period (6500 - 3500 BC). The core is triangular in profile and irregular in plan. A distinct knapping platform is present on the upper edge of the core with areas of multiple blade removals in a single direction around the edge. The small size of this core suggests that it was discarded as waste. There are areas of hinge fracturing near the base. The flint is a light grey colour. The core measures 25.4mm in length, 22.2mm width, is 20.6mm thick and weighs 14.63 grams.

Small flint waste flake / debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (3500 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly sub-triangular in both plan and profile. It has number of regular facets (caused by flaking) on the upper (dorsal) face of the flake. There is no evidence of cortex (the rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present on either face. This suggests that this flake comes from the tertiary phase of tool production. On one edge is a smooth rounded bevel. This has been created by wear, rather than flaking, and suggests that this piece of debitage is in fact from the re-working o…

Large flake of tertiary debitage which has been burnt in a fire. The flaking suggest a Neolithic date (c. 3500-2100 BC). The flake is irregular in plan and broadly sub-rectangular in cross section, evidence for flaking is present and it is possible that one small area of the dorsal face has been reworked as small relatively neat facets are present. If this were used as a tool it is likely it was produced ad hoc and discarded once a short lived task had been formed. The reworking has been applied to a crescent and it is possible that the flake was used for scraping, possibly something l…

Two fragments of tertiary waste flakes / debitage. Both flakes show evidence of knapping in several directions; neither is a tool or exhibit retouch to any face. The presence of these two flakes suggests tool making on this site – or close by during the Neolithic period 3500-2100 BC. The two flakes have a bulk weight of 1.31 grams

Large piece of raw flint / chert like material from which a series of blades and flakes have been removed. It is not a traditional core and is likely to represent a piece of raw material rather than waste. From the style of working it would suggest an early Neolithic date (c. 3500-2500 BC), with relatively large blade like flakes being removed. There are several areas of cortex present and this is abraded in nature suggesting a riverine or glacial source. The matrix of the flint is relatively coarse and it is possible that it is chert rather than true flint. It is a mid grey black col…

Four tertiary waste flakes / debitage of Neolithic or early Bronze Age date (2900 – 1800 BC). All the flakes are irregular in plan and profile with a series of varying sized flake facets present on the outer (dorsal) faces. All have clear bulbs of percussion and conchoidal fractures. There is no evidence of reworking or secondary flaking present making this material relatively rare in not being reworked. All the flints are patinated and slightly white / milky surface colour. Possible reworked flint projectile point (arrowhead) of later Neolithic date (2900 - 2100 BC). The projectile point has been formed from a tertiary waste flake / debitage and is broadly triangular in plan and cross section. It measures 26.5mm length, 15.8mm width, is 3.1mm thick and weighs 1.17 grams. Evidence for retouch or secondary working is limited and can be seen only on the pointed end / edge of the flake. This reworking is limited to hard (abrupt) hammering to form a crude serrated edge. This is the only area of retouch present and suggests that the flake was selected to cr…
