Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
U Flint object found by Sean O’Reilly at TL 9247 9971. A thin curved nodule of flint with expanded ends which carry pointed processes. The object fits easily into the hand & both ends have been battered, possibly by use as a hammer. The battering has removed scales of the thick cortex but has not penetrated to the underlying flint. It is not impossible that the damage is purely natural (e.g. by frost).

Object type: TRANCHET FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Tertiary soft hammer struck flake, sub semi-circular in plan, of pale white patinated light grey flint with a slightly darker band through the middle of the flake and a few small spots of iron stains. All flake scars to the dorsal face are also soft hammer and are struck centripetally from the curved edge, the ventral face has two small remnants of the (presumably) original ventral surface of the core tool, also to the curved edge. The distal end to the flake is broken transversely. This is appears to be a tranchet flake to sharpen the cutting edge of an adze or similar tool, if…

Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete flint flaked tranchet axehead of Mesolithic date. The flint is a pale to medium grey colour with rust-red/brown, and mainly linear, iron staining on the prominent flake ridges, in particular on one face. This may be the result of plough damage. The axehead has an oval blade and a pointed butt end, with relatively heavy flaking on all surfaces. It measures 134.55mm in length, 57.22mm in width, 30.49mm in thickness, and weighs 231.50g. This axehead is of Mesolithic date.

Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Norfolk
Workflow stage: Published Find published
This long slim flint axe is finished all over by shallow peripheral flaking to give a slightly asymmetrical lenticular section and a long oval in plan. The cutting end is narrow and only slightly damaged and is formed by tranchet flakes on each face; the butt is abrupt and has suffered minor recent damage, revealing a dark grey flint. Elsewhere the surface is heavily patinated and stained irregularly buff and dark brown. Measures 158mm x 49mm x 27mm. Axes of this form are probably from the Early Neolithic (4000-3000 BC) but are looking back to similar types of tranchet axes in the Mesolithic.

A complete flaked flint tranchet axehead of Mesolithic date. Measuring 130mm in length, 38mm in width and 40mm in thickness. This axehead has a markedly ridged plano-convex profile. The flint is patinated blue-grey over medium grey, it is relatively flaked all over with one small area of cortex on the flatter face. The cutting edge is relatively straight and formed by a series of flakes removed longitudinally, not transversely as in a tranchet axehead.

A complete flint Mesolithic tranchet axe sometimes known as a Thames Valley Pick. The axe is broadly rectangular in shape; being formed from a long mottled mid-grey coloured flint nodule which has been shaped into a crudely lozenge sectioned implement. The long edges are parallel with the blade being rounded and thinner in section whilst the butt tapers slightly in width but expands in thickness. Both the ventral and dorsal faces have a broad central ridge / spine running longitundinally along the body. This ridge has been formed during the crude knapping of the axe which has been sha…

An incomplete possible rough out trachet axehead of Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic date. It is a mid-grey flint with calcareous inclusions. It is an elongated oval with a flat broken butt. The possible blade is crescentic blade with a roughly D-shaped cross-section as the dorsal face is flat. There are signs of modern damage on all faces, perhaps through rolling or plough damage. Some percussion lines are dubious and there is no visible bi-facial working. Therefore, alternatively it could be a very rolled and abraded flint nodule impacted by a plough or other modern damage. …

Incomplete elongated laterally curved biface in light grey / white patinated flint with spotty iron staining. Invasive percussion flaking covers most of both faces although some of the original (?tertiary) flake surface survives unmodified. The proximal end is broken. The intended tool type is obscure. It may be a rough-out for a sickle, though this is far from certain. 93 x 34 x 16mm. Neolithic (perhaps early).

Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age sickle fragment, the pointed tip is absent, broken transversely by a bending fracture, leaving only the thicker basal half of the implement, it is worked from an elongated nodule of mottled grey and black flint, with some slight iron stains, both faces exhibit patches of thin, weathered cortex where the flakes failed to meet in the middle. The flake scars are from direct soft hammer percussion, with some of the earlier flake scars that are still visible appear to be hard hammer struck, the cross section at the break is lenticular. Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age basal fragment of a bifacially worked sickle blade of plano-convex section. The pointed tip is recently broken transversely revealing unpatinated black flint. The extant part is patinated white with spotty iron staining with one small patch of weathered cortex on the dorsal face. Both faces are entirely covered with direct soft hammer percussion flakes overlain with invasive pressure flake scars. Cf. a similar sickle blade from Barton Bendish (NHER 13548). 75 x 28.5 x 8mm. c.3000 - c.1500.

Neolithic scraper (with additional retouch). Dimensions 53 x 23 x 10mm. Made on a blade-like flake of dark brown flint. Both lateral edges and the distal end have rather coarse steep retouch and show signs of wear. The flake has been hard hammer struck and the proximal end has damage indicating that several blows had been necessary to separate it.

Small, possibly soft hammer struck tertiary scraper of unpatinated mid-grey flint with fine semi-invasive to steep retouch to almost all edges, including the platform. Small scrapers like this have been recorded from Mesolithic contexts as well as Early Bronze Age, this may be more likely to be from the the earlier period, if indeed it is soft hammer struck; there is a charictaristic lip on what remains of the ventral face of the platform, and no bulbal scar is present.
