A possible knapped flint Palaeolithic tool or flake. The fragment is knapped from flint which is a mottled light grey/cream colour, but where there is the original surface remaining it has developed a heavy patination, which is a age/brown colour. Only a fragment of the object has this heavy patination, but it is these areas which appear to be negative flake scars. On both scars ripples of percussion are visible. Otherwise the surfaces of the object are caused by recent damage. It weighs 14.15g. The patination, shape of the flake scars and ripples of percussion suggest this was knappe…

This retouched tool combines tools of two groups: a concave truncation burin and a straight truncation. The blade support on which the tool is made measures 77 x 19 x5mm in maximum dimension. The dorsal scar pattern on the blade indicates it was also one of a sequence of blades detached preferentially from one end of a blade core. The flint is a lightly patinated mottled grey colour and is in fresh condition. There are a number of negative flake scars on the ventral surface which appear to be contemporary with the tool as they display the same patination as the main surfaces. Th…

Small tertiary, hard hammer struck spear or knife-like implement, of sub-triangular plan form and of patinated dark orange/brown flint. Both lateral edges are steeply retouched on the dorsal face, the platform has been removed by steep bifacial retouch, presumably to enable hafting. Possibly middle to late Palaeolithic.

Palaeolithic (Upper) to Neolithic (early) side-scraper, 44mm long, 28mm wide, 12mm thick and 14.9g in weight. Made on a broken flake that has undergone severe patination processes turning it blue from a translucent light caramel brown colour. Abrupt retouch along one lateral edge only. the butt is not evident and must have fructured and shattered upon the hard hammer blow.

An Upper Palaeolithic flake end scraper on a retouched blank. The flint is a light grey in colour, with some iron staining on both faces and some white patina on the dorsal face. There are also some darker grey areas on both faces and one black patch present, on the ventral face. The bulb of percussion is very clearly defined in this example. A parallel may be found illustrated in Bond (2004, 86; ref. 10).

A flint scraper which may date from the Late Paleolithic or Early Mesolithic periods. It is sub oval, pointed at one end, and is very curved, the ventral face being convex. It is 38.8mm long, 16mm wide and 8.3mm thick. The flake is a secondary flake with cortex on the dorsal face. The striking platform seems to be in the middle of one of the long sides, not at the end. There are vertical removal scars at the left hand end of the dorsal face, and lateral removal scars at the same end on the ventral face. There is abrupt retouch on the distal end and a point is formed at the right hand …

Scraper made from a piece of opaque grey flint now with traces of milky patination, possible light gloss overall. Steep (90 degre) semi-circular retouch around end and partly up one side, sub-parallel flaking with some hinge fractures. Evidence of platform preparation/retouch at proximal end.. Ventral face showing the use of a soft hammer. Traces of cortex on one side, the other bears signs of fine retouch or use.The form of this scraper suggests a Late Upper Palaeolitic date, resembling both a 'carinated scraper' ' (Butler, 2005, Fig. 27, 6-7).

A flint Acheulian side scraper of Lower Palaeolithic date. It is sub-oval in form. The object has a shallow S-shaped profile. It is covered by removals, but with notable parallel removals on the left edge of the dorsal face to create a cutting edge. There are also three large parallel removals on the right edge of the ventral face. Above these removals on the dorsal face a small patch of cortex has been retained. The removals have been smoothed by water action and the grey flint stained orange by iron.

A large flint end scraper of probable Palaeolithic or later date. The scraper is formed from a large flint flake that is light to medium grey in colour with a thick medium to dark brown iron stained surface, the grey flint visible where exposed by plough damage. It has steep edge retouching but no evidence of glacial rolling. The scraper measures 87.57mm in length, 57.95mm in width, 22.64mm in thickness, and weighs 142.97g.

The end-scraper is on a broken blade with maximum dimensions of 55 x 23 x 6mm. The scraper edge is located at the distal end of the blade and formed by direct, semi-abrupt retouch. The opposite end of the blade is broken and characterised by a ‘languette’ fracture. The negative scars on the dorsal side of the blade are uni-directional. There is a small plage of cortex near the distal end of the artefact indicating that the tool was made on a blade from an early stage in the core reduction sequence. The profile of the blade is noticeably straight. Although not unusual, some sc…

Paleolithic Flake tool. Dimensions 69 x 48 x 21mm. Oval secondary flake with c.40% thin cortex on the distal face. The ventral face has been extensively modified by shallow peripheral flaking, leaving part of flake’s surface as a central area. The flake is stained light brown over grey flint, shown by small edge damage on the dorsal right edge. The tool resembles a miniature handaxe. Palaeolithic, possibly Middle Palaeolithic.

Late palaeolithic double-ended scraper. Segment of a large blade with a single crest in a chocolate brown stained flint. Both ends appear to have been steeply retouched to give a double ended scraper but both have suffered ancient damage. The distal edge has small neat retouch scars at both ends but the central part of the edge has two larger scars with evidence of crushing on the ventral side. The proximal end appears to have been damaged by the loss of a large chip and shows slight evidence of crushing on the ventral edge. The find spot is near one of the head ways of the River Wens…
