A complete flint handaxe of Lower Palaeolitic date. The axe is a cordate biface and is complete save for one or two small chips. One side is patinated white and retains areas of cortex; one remaining area forms a hollow. The other side is grey with a dense tangle of off white lines.

A pointed flint handaxe, 108mm in length and 189.6g in weight with bifacial working and a roughly lozengiform cross section. There is short sub-parallel abrupt retouch around all edges. The handaxe is struck from a pale orange-brown flint with cream coloured patination from post depositional exposure to chalky soils. The object is worked with soft-hammered removals across both faces; the cross section is roughly lenticular, but with an asymmetrical lump to one side.

A flint end-scraper made on a thick flake of a brown-orange flint. The scraper is sub-square in plan and broadly rectangular in profile, although the large bulb is retained on the reverse. There has been some recortication of the scraper, with this extending over the hard hammer retouching on the right side of the distal end. There are more modern removals (cutting through the patina of the recortication) to the left hand edge. This piece is hard to date as its execution is generally undiagnostic, however it is potentially Palaeolithic (c. 450,000-10,000 BC).

A complete flint bladelet with a rubbed end dating to the Late Upper Palaeolithic or early Mesolithic period, c. 40,000 - 7,000 BC. The bladelet has been made from a tertiary flake of a mottled dark brown flint. Part of the platform has been retained and this also appears to have been rubbed, as has the distal end. There are thin flake scars over the dorsal surface. There is possible ancient reutilisation damage on the left hand edge.

An unusual flint flake, with some limited retouch along the lateral edges and distal tip. The flake has a natural hole towards the proximal tip, but it does not show signs of human manipulation. The distal tip is hooked and appears to have occured naturally when the flake was struck from the core. A tertiary flake with buff-coloured patina. This flake has been retouched on both lateral edges and the proximal tip, and the bulb has been removed. The same thick patina seen over the dorsal and ventral sides of the flake can be seen over the retouched edges. There is a sub-circular notch fracture at the proximal end, although this appears to be natural. The patina on this flake suggests a date of great antiquity, possible dating from the Upper Palaeolithic or Mesolithic periods (c.300,000 - 4500 BC). A probable Middle Palaeolithic handaxe. The handaxe is incomplete and was probably broken during manufacture or use, while one small area of more modern damage is evident. The handaxe is bifacially retouched, and a creamy grey core is covered by a thick orange patina, suggesting a gravel bed context or source, such as those known from Cassington, Oxon. A Middle Palaeolithic Devensian cordiform handaxe from Cassington, Oxfordshire. The handaxe is bifacially retouched but does display some more modern weathering damage including fracturing and spooling. A grey-blue core is covered by a thick creamy-yellow patina. The handaxe measures 74.81mm long, 64.99mm wide and is 19.83mm thick. It measures 86.7gms. The Devensian period at Cassington is well attested from evidence gained during gravel extractions. The period here dates from c.75,000BC to 35,000BC.
