Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete knapped lithic implement of early Neolithic to early Bronze Age date, circa 4000 - 1600 BC. The implement is a leaf arrowhead formed from a tertiary flake which is ogival in plan and a thin ovate in section. The arrowhead has been extensively bi-facially worked with invasive covering, low angled retouch. The flint is a mid to dark-grey colour with patches of a lighter chalky inclusions. The implement is 51.7mm long, 32.6mm wide, 4.6mm thick and weighs 6.8g.

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint blade, probably Neolithic in date due to its large size. The blade is triangular in section and curved slightly. It is patinated to a light grey colour but the flint has buff tones. There is retouch on the right edge at the proximal end which cuts through the patina, showing that the flint was flaked many years before it was retouched. The blade measures 62.2mm x 21.2mm x 5.5mm, weighing 9.49g.

A flint retouched flake. It is 42.7mm in length, 21.1mm wide, and 8.7mm thick. It weighs 5.11gm. The tertiary flake has cortex surviving on the distal and of the dorsal face. There is a hinge termination at the distal end. There is very fine retouch on the proximal left side and possible blunting on the distal left side. A Neolithic date is most likely.

A Neolithic flint tool; a retouched blade which has been utilised for cutting. The flint is sub rectangular with abundant retouch on both sides and the distal end. The retouch is semi-abrupt. The blade has a double dorsal ridge which gives it extra strength. The distal end may have been used as a scraper, the edges were used for cutting, but the object is not a knife as there is no retouch on the ventral face. Denticulates have also been knapped on the left side which would allow the flint to be used for heavy duty cutting. These may have been a later addition. This multi purpose tool…

A flint flake which is 50.7mm long, 26.1mm wide and 6.3mm thick. The flake is not a specific tool form and has not been retouched. The flake is a tertiary one which is rectangular and has a “hinged” termination at the distal end. A hinged termination indicates that the force from the strike rolled sideways and caused the flake to terminate unevenly (Andrefsky, 1998, “Lithics”, Cambridge University Press, page 18-19). This in turn indicates that the flake is not part of a larger tool that has broken, as this would produce a straight, “step” termination. There is some edge da…

Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint transverse arrowhead dating from the later Neolithic period. The flint is sub-triangular in plan and is unusually broad. The point of the arrowhead is formed on in proximal end with invasive retouch along the left side and the concave distal end. The right side of the distal end extends into a single barb. This shape of arrowhead is probably a British Oblique type similar to but broader than number 13 on page 159 of Butler (2005) "Prehistoric Flintwork"

A flint microlith, probably Mesolithic in date. It is triangular in section, tapering towards the end which is broken and missing. There is extremely fine retouch on either side of the flake. It measures 20.5mm x 14.2mm x 3.6mm, weighing 0.98g. It is likely that this microlith was used as a projectile, such as an arrowhead.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A possible Neolithic flint arrowhead, in leaf shape form. However, there is little obvious evidence of retouch, with possible minute working on the left edge. The edges of the flint look to be deliberately broken, so it is possibly a tool form, but in other ways it looks like a waste flake. It measures 32.2mm x 16.9mm x 3.8mm, weighing 1.91g.

A flint borer, probably early Neolithic in date. The flint is a tertiary flake. Where the flint narrows to a point, there is fine retouch on the inside edge, and the outside edge is so finely retouched that it seems to have been pressure flaked. It should be noted that the awl is of high quality. It measures 33.2mm x 20.4mm x 7mm, weighing 4.91g.
