Knapped flint handaxe. Probably Acheulian (mode 2) dating to the lower palaeolithic. Length: 119mm, width: 75mm; thickness: 42mm; mass: 294g. Bifacially worked with a tapering, pointed tip. The butt is angled at about 45 degrees when the handaxes is viewed in profile, with a large negative flake scar visible. The flint is heavily patinated (including the butt), and off white/light grey in colour. A less heavily patinated, grey coloured surface has been exposed near to the butt where there has been some more recent damage. The surface is approximately 10% cortex, mostly on one side.

Light brown flint, approximately 5% cortex (at the distal and proximal ends). Bulb of percussion and ripples of the conchoidal fracture on the ventral face, with a retouched notch on one edge towards the proximal end, and some retouch on the opposite edge. Arris and unidirectional negative flake scars on the dorsal face with extensive semi-abrupt retouch on the edge without the notch, and some retouch on the no…

A prehistoric flint backed knife. The knife measures 95 mm long, 55.6 mm wide, 19.65 mm thick and weighs 97.4 grams. It is sub-oval in plan and lozenge shaped in section, with a ridge running down the centre of the dorsal face. The tool may be as early as upper Palaeolithic (circa 40,000 to 8300 BC) , although it is possible that it is early Neolithic in date (circa 3500 to 2900 BC), as such tools were produced throughout prehistory. The large size and shape of the knife suggests that it is probably not Mesolithic (circa 8300 to 3500 BC), when such tools were generally smaller. The …

A prehistoric worked flint tool. The tool has been made from a knapped blade which measures 49.29 mm long, 19.5 mm wide and 6.63 mm thick. It weighs 6.4 grams). It is sub-triangular in section. The striking platform and bulb of percussion are clearly visible at the proximal end. The blade has been retouched on both lateral edges and at the distal end. A probable Palaeolithic handaxe. A worn, nodular flint cobble with several steep bifacial face removals from either side, which form crude cutting edges, possibly dating to the Palaeolithic. It weighs 628g and measures 129.32x82.95x55.18mm. It does not have a thinned tip, just a rounded cobble end and the butt is entirely cortical. It could be a crude handaxe but might equally be a flake core. It has been heavily rolled with variable orange-pale yellow brown recortification.

Large flint flake, 110mm long and 39mm at its widest point. Most of the flake is flat (max 11mm thick) but it is circular in section at one end and broken, so an odd circular fossil is visible. The circular section is surrounded in coretex. Coretx covers approx.25% of the flake. The flat part of the flake is smooth on one side and curving - presumably the result of a strike, and the flake above it being lifted off. It has a milky-white patination. The other side rises to a ridge running the length at the middle. To one side of the ridge it has milky-white patination, to the other the f…

A thick butted handaxe dating to the lower Palaeolithic, heavily rolled (a beach find) and re-cortified semi gloss pale yellow-brown. The handaxe weighs 702g and measures 150x 96.43x57.72mm. Possibly originally sub-cordate or sub-pointed (tip may have been broken prior to patination). It was made on a worn nodule with some areas of cortex remaining on the butt. Bifacially worked with soft-hammer and thinned toward tip: some shaping of butt-end. Worn edges show pale grey-brown flint but this may be secondary patination.
