Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Five tertiary waste flakes / debitage of Neolithic or early Bronze Age date (2500 - 1800 BC). Four of the flakes are irregular in shape, the fifth is sub rectangular. All demonstrate either a clear bulb of percussion, conchoidal ripples, or flaking scares. There is some retouch along the edges, turning the debitage flakes into scrapers. All demonstrate a number of uncontrolled fractures, probably the result of movement within the soil. Together they all weigh 18.1 grams 1. Measures 20.35mm length, 21.96mm width, 5.90mm thick and weighs 2.8 grams. 2. Measures 34.24mm length, 17.20mm wi…

Three waste flakes / debitage of Mesolithic to Neolithic dating (4000 to 3000 BC). All three are irregular in shape. One consists of primary debitage, with more than 50% of the surface being covered by the cortex (outer rind). The other two are tertiary debitage, with little or no cortex (outer rind) present. Evdience for working consists of a clear bulb of percussion and controlled conchoidal fracturing. There is evidence of uncontrolled fracturing and plough roll, probably from movement in the soil. Together they weigh 13.1 grams. 1. Measures 42.02mm length, 19.26mm width, 10.16mm t…

Two tertiary waste flakes / debitage of Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (3000 - 1800 BC). Both are a mid brown colour and have an irregular plan. A series of varying sized flake facets are present on the outer (dorsal) faces. Along some of the edges, is evidence of reworking but this could be due to plough roll and movement in the soil. Together they weigh 4.0 grams. 1. Measures 19.14mm length, 19.54mm width, 3.88mm thick and weighs 2.2 grams. 2. Measures 24.82mm lengthm 13.23mm width, 5.77mm thick and weighs 1.8 grams.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A retouched scraper formed from a tertiary debitage / waste flake of Neolithic date (2900 - 2100 BC). It is sub oval in plan and D-shaped in cross section. The proximal end demonstrates a striking platform, with conchoidal ripples radiating down the vental (lower) face of the flake. The dorsal (upper) surface exhibits a clear central ridge, with a series of controlled flaking scars along the edge of the flake. There is evidence of uncontrolled flaking scars, probably the result of movement in the soil. The flint is a mid grey colour. It measures 32.76mm length, 34.04mm width, 9.88mm t…

Object type: CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Powys
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An irregular fragment of a flint core, used for the production of blades of Mesolithic date (6500 - 3500 BC). It is sub square in plan and D shaped in cross section. One striking platform appears to be present but the core fragment has suffered badly from movement in the soil and plough roll, as there are a significant number of uncontrolled flaking scars present. It is dark grey in colour and a small amount of cortex (outer rind) is present on the distal end of the fragment. It measures 25.32mm length, 29.51mm width, 13.79mm thick and weighs 11.1 grams.

This is a probable Neolithic flint scraper. The ventral side has a very clear bulb of percussion with a pronounced cone emanating from the point of percussion on the striking platform. Ripples then radiate across the whole ventral surface. The ventral side also exhibits direct normal retouch down both left and right edges. The dorsal surface has a number of negative/percussion scars at the proximal end with a single dorsal ridge running diagonally down to the distal edge. The left edge has some conchoidal scarring with evidence of alternate retouch. The distal edge appears fea…

Six pieces of struck flint; at least three of which suggest tertiary waste from tool making. The other three exhibit irregular flake scars and hinge fractures which might suggest natural frost damage rather than working. One flake is burnt; all flakes are low grade flint common in tool assemblages from the marches. The worked flakes can be broadly dated to the Late Mesolithic or Neolithic tool making tradition c.4500 – 2500 BC. Bulk Weight: 42.75 grams

Four pieces of struck flint. It is difficult to suggest that these are waste from tool production due to the lack of regular worked edges present. However, they are from the same site which has produced flint of Mesolithic and Neolithic date and may represent tertiary debitage. Bulk Weight: 26.67 grams

Snapped knapped flint blade of probable later Mesolithic or earlier Neolithic date (6500 – 3500 BC). The flint is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. The ventral (reverse) face has a distinct bulb of percussion and conchoidal fractures which have been broken across loosing the striking platform and heel of the flake. The dorsal face show several flake scars. There is a abrupt retouch to the long edges on the dorsal face which is evenly spaced and creates a relatively regular scraping edge. Small flint waste flake / debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (2900 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly oval in both plan and profile. It has number of regular facets caused by flaking on the upper (dorsal) face of the flake. The lower (ventral) face has very little evidence of flaking. There is no evidence of cortex (the rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present on either face. This suggests that this flake comes from the tertiary (or final) phase of tool production. The waste flake has been reworked to form a side-scraper of later Neolithic date. This has been achieve…

Small flint waste flake / debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (2900 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly D shaped in plan and sub-rectangular in profile. It has an unusual smooth surface on the upper (dorsal) face of the flake; this is possibly due to the flake being worked from an irregular piece of waste. The lower (ventral) face has very little evidence of flaking. There is no evidence of cortex (the rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present on either face. This suggests that this flake comes from the tertiary (or final) phase of tool production. The waste flake has b…

Two tertiary waste flakes / debitage of flint dating to the later Mesolithic – later Neolithic periods (4500 – 2200 BC). Both the flakes are relatively large having irregular uncontrolled broken edges. However, much of the dorsal and ventral surface of both artefacts has regular evenly spaced knapped facets. There is no evidence of reworking or secondary flaking present. These flakes are clear evidence of flint knapping at this site. Both the pieces of flint are patinated. They have combined weight of 11.23 grams 1. Measures 30.6mm length, 27.7mm width is 9.4mm thick and weighs…

Snapped knapped flint blade of probable later Mesolithic (6500 – 4500 BC). The flint is broadly sub-rectangular in plan and lentoid in cross section. The bulb of percussion is lost. The dorsal face show several long flake scars. The long edges and the blunt end have been heavily reworked with relatively neat and regular facets. The flint is a grey colour with a series of flaws and different coloured areas in the matrix. The flint blade measures 16.7mm length, 15.2mm width, and 5.4mm thick; it weighs 1.82 grams.
