Flint core 53 x 42 x 42mm. Flint, lightly burnt and changed in colour from blue-grey? to light grey. Pebble cortex. Single direction, with plain platform, hammer struck. Assessment: Attempt at prismatic blade core; probably abandoned due to poor quality. Not dateable. (George Smith, Gwynedd Archaeological Trust)

Semi-prismatic core. The flint is generally a mid-grey in colour, but one face appears to have developed a slight white patina suggesting this may have been an original 'natural' surface of the flint pebble prior to working. The other face has areas of rusty brown staining which may be iron oxide deposits from the soil. The flint has been subjected to neat, regular single direction flaking in order to produce parallel-sided flakes or blades. Discussion: The core appears to have been designed to produce blades so it is probably Mesolithic or Neolithic in origin. In shape it is ver…

Flint core, probably Neolithic, from a small nodule of flint. Cortex is present on two sides of the core, and several blade removals are visible. The flint is dark grey in colour, and has been chipped on every angle, presumably from the action of knocking against pebbles on the stony beach at Porth Dinllaen. Nodules of flint were brought to this area from elsewhere. Therefore this core is probably Neolithic (as opposed to Mesolithic) in date, because items were more likely to have been transported around at this time. However the possibility that the core is Mesolithic should…

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Notched/Spurred piece Made on an irregularly fractured fragment of poor quality light grey cherty flint, 34mm long, 35mm wide and 12mm thick. A notch has been created on one edge by a single steep flake removal. The inside of the notch has then been shaped by fine retouch. There are no visible signs of use wear in the notch. Removal of the notch has also created a ‘spur’ at one side which has some possible use edge chipping. This is rather irregular and not really a good diagnostic piece on its own but both notched and spurred pieces are typically found in Late Neolithic asse…

A probable prehistoric flint flake, possibly dating to the Neolithic period. The flake is a mixture of light and dark reddish browns in colour. There is evidence of the cortex along one edge. The flake is retouched, with apparent earlier blade/flake removals evident on the dorsal face. The bulb of percussion is visible, although it is difficult to identify any concentric waves along the ventral face which may indicate it is of natural origin. There is a small chip just below the bulb of percussion which suggests it is anthropogenic and as such this is probably a retouched flake (Shopl…

A probable prehistoric core trimming flake. The find is roughly triangular with a white, yet heavily worn patina. This would indicate that the find has been exposed for some time, likely eroding out of the soil. The flint is truncated at the distal end and probably would have originally extended to a point. The flake has a visible bulb of percussion.

A scatter of flints found in 1998. According to the finder they were found on the seaward side of a field wall near Ogof Llwyd, at Penrhyn, east of Aberdaron. They comprise 10 small flakes and blades, some of which may have been formed by natural processes. The majority are broken and may be waste flakes left as the result of knapping. Due to the occurrences of cortex in relation to flake size, it is likely that the flakes are the result of working pebbles.

Object type: BLADE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Retouched flint blade removed from a prepared core, of whitish-grey flint. The blade, manufactured from a secondary flake, has largely unifacial direct semi-abrupt retouch along both lengths, and a point has been created at the promixal end to the extent that the bulb of percussion is barely discernable. The dorsal face of the blade has a minimum of five negative scars, two of which show a hinged termination. The original colour of the blade was most likely to have a been dark-grey, and exposure to the elements has resulted in the present whitish-grey appearance.

A small lithic implement of uncertain date. The flint is sub-rectangular in plan and cross-section with an inverted triangular shaped profile. The ventral (lower) face is smooth with a few ripples and a low bulb of percussion. The dorsal (upper) face is faceted due to the removal of several possible blades. Short, parallel, low angled retouch can be seen along the shortest edge of the object. The flint is toffee-coloured. Dimensions: 12mm in length, 15mm in width, 4mm thick, 1.2g

Object type: BARBED AND TANGED ARROWHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Gwynedd
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A sub-triangular, barbed and tanged flint arrowhead. The arrowhead is quite crude in form. It is manufactured from a mainly opaque mid greenish brown flint but with a band of white around the point, and the tip of the point is translucent orange. The extreme tip of the point appears to have broken off in antiquity. One face of the arrowhead is very slightly concave, the other is very slightly convex. There are two large patches of cortex surviving on both faces of the object. In plan, the two side edges are slightly curvilinear giving the point a narrow and extended appearance. The e…
