County: Surrey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint axehead of Neolithic date, 133mm in length, struck from a mottled grey flint and bifacially worked. The axehead is symmetrical on two axes and has a lenticular cross section, flaring smoothly to a rounded cutting edge 58.7mm wide. A retouched flint flake of suggested middle Neolithic to early Bronze Age date c. 3300-1000 BC.
The secondary flake is elongated and sub-triangular in plan and cross-section; a small section of cortex surviving at the distal edge which has a chip at the terminal with fresh breaks suggesting more recent damage. The ventral surface is slightly concave with a pronounced bulb of percussion and raised rippling suggested hard hammer working. The dorsal surface has five removal scars with crude removals at the proximal end, possibly damage, but some finer …

One barb is nearly complete; possibly the tiny tip is missing, the other barb is chipped at the tip, this is an ancient break as one of the iron stains is on the surface of the break, the tang is broken obliquely but would have been little longer than t…

Complete end scraper of conventional form; made from a secondary, hard hammer struck flake of glossy black flint with some inclusions, steeply retouched at the distal end to form the semi-circular scraping edge, small patch of sandy coloured thin cortex extant to one lateral side, showing the outside curve of the flint nodule this was struck from. A very useful tool in the initial preparation of fresh hides for tanning, effective in removing the subcutaneous fat from just below the surface of the skin. Neolithic, 4,000 to 2,350 BC.

The end scraper is made from a tertiary flake of flint that is a matte light brown sometimes semi-glossy medium brown semi-translucent flint. It is broadly recyangular in plan and trapezoidal in cross section the ventral surface being wider than the dorsal surface. It has at least three earlier flake removal scars on the dorsal surface struck in the same direction as the scraper. Its distal end has medium length, semi-abrupt, parallel retouch across its length. No retouch exists on the ventral surface altho…

A possible chert scraper of Mesolithic to Bronze Age, 9000 BC - 1000 BC. The possible tool is formed on a tertiary flake of black chert with a dorsal ridge. It has possible retouch on all edges which is abrupt, sub-parallel and short. The removals are not particularly uniform, casting some doubt about their intentionality.
Length: 50.57mm
Width: 36.33mm
Thickness: 11.1mm
Weight: 26.96g
The thickness of the flake and abruptness of the retouch rules out use as an arrowhead, but it would be a functional scraper.

A possible burin formed on a crude blade of white flint. Unknown date, Mesolithic to Bronze Age (10,000 - 1000 BC). It is unclear where the flint was struck from. The faces are uneven, and most have a stepped termination scar. One end of the blade is much narrower and thinner. One side of this projection has short, abrupt, sub-parallel retouch, possibly to form a burin. There appears to be a removal across the end of the spur from the retouched edge. The tool is 38.1mm long, 16.3mm wide, 8.2mm thick. 3.3g. Burins are typically mesolithic, but the reuse of a crude blade i…
