Object type: LITHIC CORE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint single-platform microlith blade core, triangular in plan, oval in section and trapezoidal in profile. The core has had blades taken off it on only two thirds of the way around its central axis, with a layer of cortex running from one third of the edge of the platform down to the base of the core. The flint is a translucent brown-grey colour and the curvature of the core suggests that it was made from a local beach pebble. The length to breadth ratio is 4:5, which is usual for micro-cores. Bond (2004) illustrates similar examples on page 120, Fig.5.104, No.82, which is dated…

Flint snapped end scraper, semi-circular in plan, triangular in section and in profile. The proximal end and both sides of the dorsal face have been unimarignally retouched. There is also a nick in the right edge of the dorsal face, but this is probably due to damage and not deliberate. The scraper may have been broken through use if enough pressure was applied to shear it off from the other half that was still held in the haft. Alternatively, it may have been broken since being deposited through coming into contact with agricultural machinery. See CORN-2286F2 and CORN-24A3D6 for si…

Flint pebble core, almost ovoid in plan and triangular in profile. Although it has a single platform there are some retouchings along its edge to enable possible use as a scraper. Also two large removals form a point for possible use as a borer. It has been worked about half way around. It is dark grey brown with large areas of pale grey. The cortex covers 1-49% of the surface area. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 143, Fig. 5.129, No. F.153 which is dated to the Neolithic period.

Flint scraper. Dark grey flint flake, sub-rectangular in plan, section and profile. There is primary cortex on the dorsal face and appears to have derived from nodular flint. The dorsal face has abrupt retouch on the distal edge and the left and right margins. Bond (2004) shows a similar example on page 141, Figure 5.127, Number 5.

A small single platform core on a pebble which has later been left in a fire, altering the colour to cream grey and spalling most of the flaking face. There remains some signs of step fractures, shortening the flake removals.Mercer(1981) illustrates a core on page 121, fig 52, L26. .

Flint flake, sub-rectangular in plan and profile, plano-convex in section. It is a brown flint with cream flecks and patches. The dorsal face has secondary cortex which is rough in texture, possibly indicating a nodular origin. There is short, semi-abrupt retouch on the sides and the distal end. The proximal end is truncated. On the ventral face there is shallow retouch at the distal end. Bond (2004) shows a similar scraper on page 132, Figure 5.118, Number F13.

Flint scraper, roughly oblong in plan and lozenge shaped in profile. On the dorsal side the distal end has been retouched round to mid way on the right margin. The proximal end has also been retouched. On the ventral side the proximal has been snapped at an angle. The right margin also appears snapped. Both left and right margins are sharp. It is dark grey brown with cream flecks in colour. Butler (2005) illustrates a similar example on page 166, Fig. 70, No. 5 which is dated to the Neolithic period.
