A complete worked flint probable handaxe of Palaeolithic date (500,000 - 180,000 BC). Description: The object is sub-triangular in plan and sub-triangular in cross section. The proximal end is bulbous, reducing to a point at the distal end. It is formed from a secondary flake of translucent brown flint with white patination over most of the surface. There are two small areas at the proximal end with a sandy colour and texture and the dorsal face has red brown iron staining over half of its surface. The object has been bifacially w…

A bifacially flaked flint handaxe dating from the Lower Palaeolithic c.800,000-250,000 BC. Description: The handaxe is quite crude but is roughly pointed with a wide rounded butt. It has been bifacially worked, with flaking cover both sides, this has been uneven however leaving one side much thicker than the other and the thinner side being slightly concave. The flint is heavily patinated a white to beige-white and the internal flint where visible is a mid grey-beige. It has been rolled on the surface causing damage to the desert gloss by glacial frost. Core in mint condition, all flakes are hard hammer struck from a sub-cylindrical section of unpatinated black flint, with thin weathered cortex extant to the areas that have not been modified. One "edge" has been formed by bifacial flake removals, the thicker end has a transverse flake struck from it, a previous (cortical) flake scar has given the platform to do so. Small traces of clay remain in the deep parts of the surface mostly to one side, this is the remains of the deposit at site 3 it was recovered from. Lower Palaeolithic, Circa 600,000 BC, possibly earlier.

The tool has been bifacially worked, but is asymmetrical, with a convex and a flat side providing a wedge shaped profile. Single edged segmental “chopping” tool of Wymer, J.J. (1999) type L, of thinly orange patinated mottled grey to black flint, now in slightly rolled condition with losses to the high points of the flake scars and the thinner edges. All flakes appear to be hard hammer struck; two small patches of cortex remain to the thicker edge opposing the cutting edge. Lower Palaeolithic, 600,000 to 250,000 BC, probably of the earlier date given the site.
