Object type: WASTE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A knapped flint waste flake dating to the Bronze Age, c. 2150-800 BC. The flake has a very large bulb of percussion and ripples on the ventral face; the dorsal face has three blade removals. There is a small area of possible retouch visible on the dorsal face, but the condition of the cherty flint makes the evaluation of this difficult and the extent of the possible retouch suggests that this flake was not used as a tool. It measures 59.5 mm long, 40.2 mm wide, 10.4 mm thick and weighs 25.61 grams.

A small tranchet axe made from a large flake, 89.2mm long, 46.8mm wide and 25.9mm thick. The implement is made of dark brown flint with numerous lighter and darker cherty inclusions; about 5% cortext remains. The upper, dorsal face, has multiple arrises; at least 7 flakes had previously been removed from the core but later retouching and possible flaking from use makes an exact count difficult. The ventral, lower face, has two large facets with again multiple scars from retouching and damage; these have removed the bulb of percussion/bulb scar. The visible bulb scars and percussion wa…

Previous removals on the dorsal face suggest the core was worked from multiple directions. The sides have large chips removed, probably as a result of later damage. The distal end is broken and it is not clear whether or not this was deliberate. There is a small area of semi-invasive, semi-abrupt, parallel retouch around the right corner of the distal end on the dorsal face and some use wear/blunting retou…

A scraper formed on a hard-hammer-struck flake. The percussion waves are shallow but suggest the bulb-of-percussion was at an end which has been completely retouched with shallow, invasive retouch on the ventral face. The dorsal face is entirely covered in cortex, apart from around the edges, where it has been retouched. There is short, semi-abrupt, scalar retouch extending around the proximal end, right-hand edge, distal end and the distal half of the left edge. Apart from the part already mentioned, around the proximal end and proximal part of the right-hand edge, the ventral face h…

Middle - Late Neolithic discoidal flint scraper. Sub circular in shape and made on a secondary flake in mid-orange brown flint. The dorsal face has several flaking scars from earlier working of the core from which the flake was struck. The ventral face has a low bulb of percussion with a large bulbar scar at the proximal end. At the proximal end is a narrow striking platform. On the dorsal face the left edge and distal end have extensive retouch. The retouch is scaled with invasive shallow retouch, particularly on the left edge and short semi abrupt retouch on top of this and around t…

A probably Neolithic end and side scraper, dating from c. 3500-2100 BC. The scraper is sub-oval or 'thumb-shaped' in plan with a flat ventral face with some of the original bulb of percussion intact and shallow conchoidal ripples. Damage or purposeful removal of part of the bulb is visible in a shallow circular area. The platform of percussion is covered in a milky white-grey cortex. From the dorsal face, the left mesial edge does not seem to be retouched at all, or perhaps only very finely from the ventral face in order to blunt the surface for holding. Semi-abrupt retouch is vis…

A complete knapped flint end scraper, probably dating to the Late Neolithic-Early Bronze Age, c. 2500-1500 BC. The scraper is fashioned from a piriform shaped flake. The dorsal face has regular full-length longitudinal facets and arises associated with previous flake removal from the core. The distal end shows evidence of abrupt retouch, common to this period. The ventral face maintains the remains of a small portion of the platform, light bulb of percussion and ripples. The scraper measures 40.2mm long, 32.1mm wide, 7.69mm thick and weighs 11.81 grams.

A complete knapped flint end-scraper dating to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, c. 4000-1500 BC. The scraper retains its platform and bulb of percussion on its ventral face, although evidence around the platform of repeated striking suggests that some preliminary attempts to remove this were made. Th scraper has been manufactured on a primary or secondary flake of dark blackish tan coloured flint, with a large patch of cortex present in a dished area of the dorsal face that covers c. 30-40% of the upper surface. The scraper has been secondarily modified around its distal end through the m…
