Record ID: ESS-3865D1
Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Probable waste flake of Mesolithic or Neolithic date. Knapped from mid brown flint. This flake has a small bulb of percussion with some scaring and impact ripples. There is a natural cream-brown cortex surviving along both edges of the flake. There is no evidence of retouch, and the flint has snapped. The flake may have been produced by natural damage to a nodule of flint. It is 22.72mm long, 32.69mm wide, 7.41mm thick and weighs 5.84 grams.

There is also a small amount of scaring on the proximal end of the dorsal surface. The dorsal surface has a central ridge along its length. There is a small area of cream cortex on the distal end of the dorsal surface. There is possible retouch along one edge, however this could be due to post depositional damage. Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Doncaster
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint leaf shaped arrowhead which probably dates from the Early Neolithic period. The arrowhead is 31.7mm long, 19.3mm wide and 4.7mm thick. It is a kite-shaped form, meaning it is the same shape at both ends. It is invasively retouched on both faces to shape it precisely. This would have required great skill. Although this type of arrowhead is sometimes found in Late Neolithic and Bronze Age contexts, there is no evidence to suggest that they were used after the middle Neolithic (Butler 2005). The flint is completely patinated and is white and brown in colour.

Small flint waste flake / debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (3500 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly sub-triangular in both plan and profile. It has number of regular facets (caused by flaking) on the upper (dorsal) face of the flake. There is no evidence of cortex (the rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present on either face. This suggests that this flake comes from the tertiary phase of tool production. On one edge is a smooth rounded bevel. This has been created by wear, rather than flaking, and suggests that this piece of debitage is in fact from the re-working o…
