County: East Riding of Yorkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A retouched flake of Mesolithic date, 7000 - 4000 BC. The flake is a mottled pale grey colour, and is sub-rectangular in shape. Two narrow flakes have been struck from the dorsal side, with a third flake removed towards the top of the flake. This has been further worked towards the distal end. The concave ventral face is smooth with a low bulb of percussion. There is semi-abrupt, sub-parallel, very short retouch along the left mesal to form a scraper or small saw-like implement. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000 - 4000 BC. Length: 43.2mm, Width: 12.6mm, Thickness: 5.5mm. Weight: 3.7g.

Two incomplete flint Mesolithic blades. 1. A tertiary blade with an abrupt break across both ends and some rolling along both edges. There are no other signs of retouch. This is an exceptionally shiny dark grey flint with lighter grey diagonal striations faintly visible. Lawrence Billington (pers. com.) suggests this is not a local flint and was probably glacially introduced, plus has been in contact with intense heat at some stage. Length: 25.26mm, width: 11.13mm, thickness: 3.13mm, weight: 0.88g 2. A long, pointed tertiary glade with an abrupt break across the proximal end. Some no…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete flint paleolithic core/chopper. Jason Gibbons comments that this 'appears to have been made from a small cobble or frost (thermal) fractured piece of black flint, now patinated bright orange and quite heavily rolled, there are small areas of recent damage to the edges showing the original colour. Both faces have had centripetal hard hammer flake removals, except where angles would be too abrupt for a successful flake to be struck, on one face the flakes overlap in the middle, the other retains cortex either side. It is uncertain if this is a bifacial chopper-core (Wymer's Ty…

A complete flint handaxe of lower Paleolithic date. Jason Gibbons comments that this is 'a Wymer (1999) Type G handaxe of sub-cordate form. All flake scars appear to be hard hammer struck, the blank for this piece was a flat nodule of flint a little larger than the finished handaxe, this is evidenced by patches of water-worn cortex extant to both faces. The dark grey flint with paler inclusions has patinated a mottled orange colour from exposure to glacial sands and gravels and the iron oxides within. The edges and the high points to the flake scars are lightly rolled, with recent dama…

A flint possible hollow scraper of probable late Neolithic to Bronze Age date, 3300 BC - 1000 BC. It is formed on a hard hammer secondary blade of grey flint, with cortex at the distal end and on the striking platform. It is sub-rectangular, expanding in width at the distal end. There is a notch in the middle of the right side, worked from the ventral face with semi-abrupt, short, scaled retouch which could be used as a hollow scraper. The blade is 58.4mm long, 29.3mm wide and 10.7mm thick. 13.9g.
