A serrated flint implement, likely of Early Neolithic date, c. 4000 - 3300 BC. Description: The object is a serrated blade, broadly rectangular in plan and triangular in section. The ventral face has a clear striking platform and parallel blade removal down its surface. Along the right-side edge of the ventral face is short stepped low-angle retouch, possibly achieved using a soft hammer. The dorsal face is smooth with only conchoidal rippling. The object is opaque and patinated blue and grey, possibly an indication of being in alluvial deposits. Measurements…

Pale brown flint serrated implement. A sub-rectangular flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of a slightly concave ventral surface.  Very fine serrations, more readily felt than observed, follow one long straight edge. A dense creamy patina then developed overall, suggesting a prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment. This was interrupted by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect to follow part of that long edge opposite the serrated one, forming a robust and now slightly concave cutting edge. Pale grey flint with cortex spot; serrated implement. A small flake with long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and a bulb on the ventral side. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the longest straight edge, creating serrations so fine that they are more easily felt than observed. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 27.9mm, Width: 13.7mm, Thickness: 4.8mm, Weight: 1.96gms

Pale grey flint serrated implement fragment. A small flake with narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a flat and faintly rippled ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge, producing serrations so fine they are more readily felt than observed. The surface is lightly misted with patina suggesting the object has endured a limited period of exposure to a calcareous environment. Broken at one end, probably recently. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 20.2mm, Width: 11mm, Thickness: 2.6mm, W…

Grey-buff flint serrated implement fragment. A small flake with long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a slightly wavy concave ventral surface. Extremely short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one straight edge, forming serrations that are more easily felt than observed. Creamy patina with light iron staining covers the object except for at one broken end, suggesting it has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment after its deposition. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 24.7mm, Width: 11.5mm, Thickness: 3.5m…

Dark grey- brown flint serrated implement. A thin sub-ovoid flake with narrow and broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of a slightly concave ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the longest edge. Both ends are also lightly battered. This coastal context has produced a number of finely worked early tools in dark, often brownish, varieties of non-local flint. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 44.0mm, Width: 26.5mm, Thickness: 6.6mm, Weight: 8.59gms.

Chocolate brown flint of good quality, serrated implement fragment. A flake with three long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a slightly concave ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the longest straight edge, forming serrations so fine they are more readily felt than observed. What remains of the opposite long edge bears very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect, forming a further cutting edge. One end of the tool is broken obliquely, with the loss of part of this edge. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7…

Grey flint with cortex serrated implement. Flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a flat ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one straight edge; one end of this cutting edge may be lost to a break incurred in antiquity. The opposite edge bears a longer extent of apparent retouch, though much of this appears to arise from fortuitous impacts along that edge. A milky patina indicates the object was exposed to a calcareous environment after its deposition. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 51mm, Width: …

Black flint with cortex spot, possibly collected from the East Coast, serrated implement. Long curved flake with long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a concave rippled ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch, more easily felt than observed, and executed from the dorsal aspect, follows the longest edge, and is perhaps supplemented by damage along the same edge producing tiny conchoidal scars. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 52.7mm, Width: 13.8mm, Thickness: 7.3mm, Weight: 5.99gms
