Flint serrated blade or saw, ovate in plan, rectangular in profile, and triangular in section, with sub-parallel lateral margins, unimarginal worked edges, and a snapped distal end and truncated proximal end. Both margins of the dorsal face have been re-worked. There are two notches, on both margins at the proximal end of the dorsal face, which might have aided in hafting. No cortex survives on the dorsal face, which suggests that the implement has been made from a tertiary flake. There are patches of gloss on the dorsal face along the medial ridges and on the ventral face near one ed…

Dark grey semi-translucent flint of good quality saw. Flake with broad parallel flake removal scars on its dorsal side and a bulb on the ventral, all from unidirectional working, and with one finely serrated edge, more easily felt than seen, along one curving side, the latter executed as very short abrupt retouch from the dorsal aspect. Dark grey-brown flint of good quality, with slight cloudy patina on the dorsal side only, saw. Flake with parallel flakes removed from the dorsal sider and faint ripples across the ventral. One edge bears very fine serrations, better felt than seen, executed by very short retouch executed from the dorsal side. Broken and battered at both ends, probably deliberately as the object fits well between finger and thumb. The material resembles that of NLM-1CE34B. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Dark mottled brown Flint of good quality, cf. NLM-FEE5D1 Saw, of sub-triangular plano-convex section along its blade, which is broken at one end, probably in antiquity and possibly deliberately. A long flake bears two long flake removal scars on its dorsal aspect, and a very pronounced bulb of percussion on the ventral side at its wider end. The 'bulb' describes a forty-five degree angled turn, giving a heavier handle end to the tool. The removal of a further long flake parallel to the flakes removed from the dorsal aspect gives a flat back as one edge, and would serve as finger …

Grey semi-translucent Flint of high quality. Saw. Flake with long hard hammer flake removal scars across all of the dorsal aspect, and with a marked bulb of percussion on the ventral aspect where it has been removed from the core. Subsequent working was probably pressure flaking around the edges executed from the dorsal aspect. This is part of a small group of objects of apparently similar function - perhaps the cutting of skin or sinew - reported from the same location, perhaps elements of a specialist tool kit lost together. This suggests the group deserves to be considered as a fin…

Dark mottled brown Flint of good quality, saw. Long plano-convex flake with long parallel flake removal scars on its convex dorsal aspect, a bulb of percussion at one end on the ventral aspect where the flake was removed from core. Fine pressure flaked retouch, mainly executed from the dorsal aspect, extends almost all round the flake, conferring a very finely serrated edge. The quality of both the material selected and its working, especially the controlled removal of long flakes, suggests an Early Neolithic date. The recent re-dating of the Early Neolithic to 4000-3500 BC may accomm…

Grey translucent flint of high quality. Flint saw. Long flake of triangular section and curved in profile produced by the removal of two long flakes from its dorsal aspect and the subsequent detaching of flake from core. Retouch includes the very fine pressure flaked denticulation of both long edges of the flake to create finely serrated edges. To permit its use, the blade may have been hafted; its strenuous use would seem difficult with the opposed edges simultaneously sharp. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Pale grey translucent Flint of high quality. Flint saw fragment. Knapped sub-triangular flake bearing three long parallel flake removal scars on its dorsal aspect. One end is broken, probably recently, and one side edge bears fine tiny pressure flaked denticulations forming a serrated cutting blade. The selection of excellent material and its assured working suggest an Early Neolithic date, while its fresh condition hints at recent disturbance from a sealed context. Flint saw, P-shaped in plan, rectangular in profile and triangular in section. There is retouch on the left margin of the dorsal face, creating the serrated edge used for sawing, and the right margin is backed for handling. The proximal end is smooth and there is a layer of cortex remaining on the distal end, suggesting that this is a primary flake. The colour of the flint is a mottled grey-brown colour which suggests that it has probably been derived from a local beach pebble. The orangey discolouration around the proximal end and on the cortex is organic staining from peat. Bond (…

Flint saw on a chert flake that is sub-ovoid in plan, plano-convex in profile and section. On the dorsal face the left margin is serrated (as a result of fine retouch on the ventral face). On the right margin there are several notches, possibly the result of damage. Between the damage are signs of serration. On the ventral face there is a long band of gloss extending from the top right (distal end) to the lower left (proximal end). There is a smaller patch towards the top left. Flint saw, roughly trapezoid in plan and rod shaped in section. On the dorsal side both angles of the left margin have been retouched with the lower end invasively. The lower right margin has been finely serrated and the upper right margin snapped. On the ventral side the right margin has been retouched. The lower left margin has a serrated edge and the upper left edge is snapped. The flint is translucent dark brown grey with an opaque area of lighter grey inclusion. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 116, Fig. 5.100, No. 4 which is dated to the Mesolithic period.

Flint blade which has had retouch on each side, giving a serrated edge. Although this serration is slight the blade can be termed as a saw. The blade has been snapped at the proximal end and there is a marked medial ridge on the dorsal side. Natural fracturing has taken place at the distal end. The flint is a very light grey colour, almost white, and was likely derived from a local beach pebble. Mercer [1981] illustrates a similar example on page 143, Fig.63, No.L198 which is dated to the Neolithic.

Flint saw on a flake that is sub-ovoid in plan, bi-convex in profile and section. On the dorsal face the right margin is denticulated by fine, abrupt retouch. There may be fine retouch on the left margin. The flint is pale grey, with patination. There is no cortex so it is classed as tertiary. Bond (2004) shows a similar saw on page 143, Figure 5.129, Number 150.

Flint saw on flake, sub-rectangular in plan, lozenge in profile and section. Bulb removed from ventral face. Saw retouch from the distal end three quarters of the right edge of the dorsal face. The flint is dark grey colour with lighter flecks. Bond (2004) illustrates a similar example on page 143, Fig. 5.129, No. F150, which is dated to the later Neolithic.

This is a blade which may have been used as a saw. The dorsal face has a flattened medial ridge from which flakes have been removed towards the both margins. The right margin is "nibbled", while the left lower margin from mesial to proximal is more obviously serrated. This has been achieved withshallow abrupt retouch from the ventral face. The distal left shoulder also shows retouch from the ventral face, while the right shoulder has been snapped. The flint is dark grey with light grey and cream flecks and was possibly derived from a beach pebble. The whole piece is vry glossy and …
