Fragment of a flint nodule with a natural, off-centre hole through, of mottled grey flint with bands of orange/brown, now broken transversely across the hole. Part of the outer cortex appears to have been removed by hard hammer percussion from the centreline when viewed from the side, with flake scars struck from this point being struck centripetally towards the hole and bifacially knapped, some of the flake scars have crushed and not come away cleanly, part of the cortical edge is too steep for flakes to have been removed and remains unmodified apart from a couple of old frost fractur…

An incomplete perforated cobble "mace head" or pebble hammer of probable Mesolithic to Neolithic date. The mace head is a well rounded oblong in plan, sub-rectangular in profile and sub-oval in cross-section with three sides that have a rounded central ridge and rounded corners. It may have been a beach pebble that had a natural hole which was then exploited to create the mace. The majority of the object is covered in thick, natural, original cortext but it has been broken and worked on two adjoining sides, exposing the flint. The side with the flint exposed completely has a straig…

A fragment of a cream flint mace-head. Most of the shape can be inferred from the remaining exterior surface except for the exact shape of the butt and hence length, but it seems to be egg shaped in plan and of the 'ovoid A' type(Roe,F.1968). The top and bottom surfaces are flat and parallel with all but the last traces of flake scars (2 visible) ground out. It is generally considered that perforated flint mace-heads due to the exceptional hardness and fragility are unsuitable for perforating. Fortunately flint nodules are often naturally perforated and it is then a matter of widening…

A possible flint pebble mace head dating from the Neolithic period. The central hole is straight rather than hour-glass shaped - the use of a bow drill (a laborious task through flint) would produce a straight perforation, but this may also be a pebble with a natural hole; if found objects with naturally occurring perforations were utilised by prehistoric man. The nose or tip of the possible mace head shows limited evidence of impact. This possible mace head measures 66.13mm long, 57.81mm wide and is 34.47mm deep. The hole is 20.20mm in diameter and the object weighs 198.5gms.
