Of mottled flint, now patinated orange/brown and black with a patch of white chalky cortex to one side of what would eventually be intended as the butt or point, recent damage to the edges shows the flint was originally grey/black with a very large coarse inclusion to the middle. Lower Palaeolithic, c. 600,000 BC.

Semi-hard hammer struck miniature handaxe of Wymer’s type E, in slightly rolled condition: - of mottled grey flint now orange/brown patinated, the recent damage to the thin edges now show the original light to dark grey colour of the flint. one lateral edge has circa. 5 mm missing from the width, also recent sea damage. Although very small, it has had the effort put into it to further sharpen the point with a tranchet flake removal (point type vi). Small, semi-hard hammer struck handaxe of Wymer’s type E, in lightly rolled condition: - of mottled grey flint now orange/brown patinated, the recent damage to the thin edges now show the original colour of the flint. The cortex to the butt (butt type a) is predominately to one face, though there is a tiny patch to the other face between the flake scars, this may indicate this handaxe could have been made from a flattened cylindrical knob broken off from a larger, irregular nodule of flint, no tranchet flake scar to the point (point type v). Lower Palaeolithic, c. 600,000 BC.

Crude handaxe or handaxe rough-out, semi-hard hammer struck from a small, flattish nodule of black glossy flint with slightly different formations of cortex to each face, the dorsal face is whiter than the grey cortex to the ventral, both patches of cortex are thin and worn. The flint is flawed with a large white linier thermal crack to the dorsal face, the ventral has three chalky voids within the flint that have caused “potlids” (discoidal thermal fractures) to pop off the surface around them, the combination of these flaws may have been the reason the handaxe was unfinis…
