Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: County of Herefordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An abraded tertiary debitage / waste flake of probable later Neolithic date (4500-2000 BC). The flake is irregular in form being broadly triangular in shape. The upper (dorsal) face has the remains of removal scars. The edges are slightly denticulaed but this is most likely due to movement in the ploughzone (plough bumble). The flake is very thin being a mid grey colour. The flakes measures 17mm length, is 15mm wide and 2mm thick

An abraded tertiary debitage / waste flake of probable later Mesolithic date (6500-4500 BC). The flake has been abraded within the ploughzone resulting in an irregular shape. Originally it was rectangular in form with a distinctive bulbar scar on the ventral face and prepared platform on the distal end. The dorsal face has a central crested ridge. All other removals are modern and the blade has been rolled in the topsoil. The flint is a coarse grained mid- grey black colour consistent with locally utilised chert. The blade measures 20mm length, is 13mm wide.

An abraded tertiary debitage / waste flake of probable later Neolithic date (4500-2000 BC). The flake is irregular in form being broadly triangular in shape. The upper (dorsal) face has the remains of removal scars and it is possible that the edges have been crudely retouched to form a short lived cutting or scraping tool. The flake is very thin being a mid grey brown colour. The flakes measures 39.7mm length, is 25.7mm wide

An abraded tertiary debitage / waste flake of probable later Neolithic date or Early Bronze Age date (3500-1800 BC). From the form of the flake it is possible that this is an aborted barbed and tanged arrowhead discarded during knapping. A large pale grey coloured inclusion is present that would have prevented finer working. The flake is irregular in form having been struck as a blade like flake. One edge has been worked to create a pseudo-tang. The dorsal face is more heavily worked than the ventral although there is no evidence of retouch / finer working. The flint is a dark grey bl…

An abraded secondary debitage / waste flake of probable later Neolithic date or Early Bronze Age date (3500-1800 BC) which has been crudely retouched to form a scraper. The flake is broadly rectangular in plan and wedge shaped in cross section. The retouch has been applied to only the dorsal face on two edges and is best described as poorly organised short, sub-parallel and semi-abrupt. The flint is a brown black colour with a distinctive cream coloured cortex. It is likely that this secondary retouch is applied to utilise a waste flake and discarded shortly after creation. The f…

An irregular struck flake of Neolithic date (4000-2500 BC). The flake has been struck in multiple directions during the tertiary phase of the tool production most probably during the making of a large core tool - the flake shows multiple removals in opposing directions on the dorsal face. It is relatively thin and a mid grey colour. It is possible that it may have been worked along one edge to form a crude scraper The flake measures 28.1mm in length, 13.7mm width, is 6.6mm thick and weighs 2.89 grams.

A snapped flint waste flake (debitage) from tool production of probable earleir Neolithic date (4000 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly rectangular in plan and sub-triangular cross section. The flake has been snapped from a larger blade like flake and reworked along one edge on the dorsal face to create a crude cutting edge. It is highly likely that this flake was a by-product (or waste flake / debitage) of tool making; if this is the case then it is from the tertiary (3rd) phase of flaking as all the cortex has been removed. Three pieces of flint debitage of Neolithic date. The group comprises two unworked tertiary debitage waste flakes and a piece of secondary waste which has been reworked to form a crude scraper. The reworking is limited to a single curved edge and the retouch can be described as short scaled abrupt in nature. All pieces have been abraded in the plough soil. They have a bulk weight of 12.05 grams Retouched secondary debitage measures: 26.6 mm length, 28.8mm width, is 19.7mm thick and weighs 2.45 grams Tertiary debitage: 61.4mm length, 35.0mm width, is 26.9mm thick a…

Small flint flake possibly debitage probably dating from the Neolithic period (3500 - 2100 BC). The flake is broadly sub-rectangular in both plan and profile. It has a number of facets (caused by flaking) on both sides however the bulb of percussion has been lost. There is cortex (rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present which suggests that this flake comes from the tertiary phase of tool production. There is slight evidence for secondary reworking on one edge however, the flint has been plough rolled and a number of the facets present are due to this damage. The flint is of a li…

It has a number of facets (caused by flaking) on both sides and a bulb of percussion on the rear. There are two small areas of cortex (rough outer skin of the flint nodule) present which suggests that this flake comes from the secondary phase of tool production. There is no evidence of secondary reworking on any of the edges which suggests that it has not be utilised as a tool (such as a scraper). The flint is a mid brown grey colour with a nu…
