Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flint possible arrowhead. Lozengiform or rhomboid thick flake with broad flakes struck from both dorsal and ventral surfaces; an unusually symmetrical object although thicker than the leaf-shaped arrowheads of the early Neolithic. Either end could have served as point or cutting edge, and fine serrations appear on the curved end and perhaps along the sides as well, so this may have been mounted ‘inverted’ as an oblique arrowhead. A dense white patina may suggest the object has endured long exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: possibly Late Neolithic, 2700-2…

Pale grey flint, appearing honey-coloured under transmitted light, arrowhead, as kindly identified by the finder. A thin sub-triangular flake [formerly triangular, tip lost leaving a positive hinge fracture at its end] with covering angled scalar retouch across both its sides. Very fine serrations along one long side are more easily felt than observed; a more limited zone of very short abrupt retouch appears on the opposite long edge. Misty patina on part of both sides suggests the object has subsequently endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. This object bears compa…

Grey flint possible arrowhead fragment; the finder kindly suggests this to be a petit tranchet arrowhead, though a cutting edge produced by a single draft is lacking. Grey flint oblique arrowhead fragment. Sub-triangular flake [tip lost] with a broad flake struck from its dorsal side and with a slightly convex ventral surface. Angled intrusive scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the shorter of the opposed long edges, with very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect following the longer. The shorter side is taken to be the butt where an arrow shaft would be sited. Patina has developed mainly on the ventral surface, suggesting that side to have been exposed to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: late Neolithic, …

Flint oblique arrowhead, as kindly identified by the finder. Thin sub-triangular flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and a flat ventral surface with a tiny bulb behind the point of the putative arrowhead. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the longest side to form a cutting edge; the shaft of an arrow would presumably be set in the basal angle. Dense white patina may suggest its subsequent exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2500-2350 BC Length: 29.4mm, Width: 17.3mm, Thickness: 3.7mm, Weight: 1.61gms

Grey flint oblique arrowhead, as kindly identified by the finder. Very short abrupt retouch executed from both sides may have added a serrated edge, though some or all of this might have arisen adventitiously from edge-on impacts. Flint probable arrowhead. A sub-triangular flake with broad and narrow flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of a wavy ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect follows one of the convergent long edges. The finder kindly suggests a possible identification as a transverse or oblique arrowhead, a later Neolithic object type. The forming of sharp edges indeed appears deliberate, and the object is appropriately lightweight. However, its wavy profile might have impeded flight were this to be mounted on a shaft. Pale grey flint arrowhead. A thin sub-triangular point with covering angled scalar retouch across both sides. Chipped at its base. This object compares to the larger triangular points known from early individual barrow burials, as at Callis Wold, East Riding of Yorkshire. These points were so finely made as to almost prohibit their mundane use, often from local flint of mediocre quality, perhaps itself a significant selection and exalting the level of skill required for their production. White Patinated Flint Possible Arrowhead. Leaf shaped flake with four flake removal scars on its dorsal aspect and a subsequent bulb of percussion on the ventral side. Semi-translucent flint with cortex, possible arrowhead, otherwise a point. Triangular flake with bulb of percussion on ventral aspect. The dorsal face bears three other rippled flake removal scars and long narrow flake removal scars down two convergent edges. The selection of apt material, removal of long flakes and skilful working should probably argue a Neolithic date. The object could serve as a small arrowhead, though if so it was a very casually executed piece. Suggested date: Neolithic, 3500-2100 BC.
