Grey-brown flint with possibly marine derived ‘cortex’ possible backed blade. A narrow flake with a broad flake struck from its dorsal side and  a concave rippled ventral surface. Long angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect travels parallel to the long edge, and was perhaps followed by short abrupt retouch adjacent. The cortex, which may be marine derived, may have been retained to permit pressure to be brought to bear on what must have been an ephemeral cutting edge. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 42.6mm, Width: 14.5mm, Thickness: 7.9m…

Grey-brown mottled flint backed blade. A thick D-shaped flake with a single large flake trimmed from its dorsal side by hard hammer strike and with part of a bulb at one end of its ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the longer curving edge. The butt enabling pressure to be brought to bear may have been formed by trimming or loss of part of a slightly larger flake, as implied by the incomplete bulb; it is now attractively polished by use-wear. A flake may also have been detached by hard hammer strike delivered from the ventral aspect to improve…

Pale brown  semi-translucent flint, possibly collected from the East Coast, possible backed blade. A small thin flake with a single long flake trimmed from its dorsal side and a slightly concave ventral surface which is faintly rippled; bulb lost to a recent chip. A re-formed possibly marine-derived cortex has been retained along one long side. A single thin spall from thew opposite long edge appears to have created a sharp if ephemeral cutting edge. Probably made for a single task as there is scant evidence of use wear. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC Length: 27.8m…

Pale grey opaque flint with cortex spot, possible backed blade. A thick flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes removed from its two broad sides by unidirectional hard hammer strike. Short abrupt retouch, probably executed from the dorsal aspect, follows part of the curved edge opposite the platform.  It appears that the platform was retained to enable pressure to be brought to bear on the opposite curved cutting edge. Pale grey flint with cortex backed blade. A sub-triangular flake with a broad flake struck from its dorsal side, and with a positive hinge fracture along one long edge. A bulbar ventral surface has had about three large flakes removed by hard hammer strike, the last being in the same position as the first flake trimmed to produce a robust triangular section cutting edge. The rounded surface of the hinged fracture would enable pressure to be brought to bear on the opposite putative working edge. Black flint, possibly collected from the East coast, possible backed blade. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curved edge. Creamy patina over all struck surfaces suggests the object was subsequently exposed to a calcareous environment, while orange spots suggest its incorporation into gravel. Dark grey flint with cortex, backed blade. A small chunk of wedge-shaped profile which has experienced two episodes of hard hammer working. Periods of exposure to a calcareous environment promoted the formation of a dense white patina overall, from the difference in the two sides probably after the initial working of the flint, and again after its re-use. The cortex was retained opposite a putative cutting edge formed by these episodes, perhaps to permit force to be brought to bear on the working edge. Grey-buff flint, possibly collected from the East Coast, backed blade. A thick flake with a broad flake struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at the narrower end of its ventral surface. Slight misty patina on the dorsal side only may indicate its limited exposure to a calcareous environment. This is interrupted by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect and following the longest straight edge. A positive hinge fracture may have permitted – not very comfortably – pressure to be exerted on the putative cutting edge. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Le…

Grey-brown flint backed blade. Flake with long narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of its ventral surface. Patches of misty patina, denser on the ventral side, suggest a subsequent period of exposure to a calcareous environment. The patina is removed by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal side and following one straight edge. Similar retouch also trims a rounded end to serve as a small scraper. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, perhaps reusing Mesolithic or recent debitage, 4000-3500 BC Length: 39.4mm, Width: 23.5mm, Thickness: 8…

Opaque grey flint backed blade. A D-shaped flint with a convex dorsal surface bearing re-formed cortex and with a bulb at one end of its ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect trims cortex along a long convex edge. Broad flakes are also trimmed from the dorsal side by angled retouch trimming further cortex, and producing a straight and now battered edge opposite the convex cutting edge. Subsequently abraded. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 43.5mm, Width: 27.4mm, Thickness: 9.4mm, Weight: 13.38gms

Pale grey-buff flint backed blade. Thin trapezoid flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb, platform and positive hinge fracture on its ventral side. The development of misty patina suggests a subsequent period of exposure to a calcareous environment. The patina was trimmed along one straight edge by very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect, with the smooth surface of the hinge fracture permitting pressure to be brought to bear on that cutting edge. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 35.3mm, Width: 29.2mm, Thickness: 5.1mm…

Flint possible backed blade. Thick oval flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb and platform at one end of the ventral surface. Angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge, with one or two similar drafts trimming the opposite long edge; retouch may also pass round a curved end. A dense white patina suggests the object subsequently endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 41.6mm, Width: 23.9mm, Thickness: 10mm, Weight: 10.62gms

Flint possible backed blade; the finder kindly suggests this to be a possible knife. Thin sub-rectangular flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side, and with a flat ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect follows one long edge, with the opposite edge left uneven, and was perhaps carried round to the adjacent straight edge. The longer extent of retouch produced serrations on the long edge which are more readily felt than observed. Dense white patina may suggest the subsequent exposure of the object to a calcareous environment. Suggested dat…
