Grey flint serrated implement. Flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with ripples on the ventral. The bulb has been flattened by angled retouch executed from the ventral aspect. A serrated edge was formed by very short abrupt retouch along a straight edge, executed from the dorsal aspect. This may have been superseded by subsequent angled retouch executed from the ventral aspect towards the opposite edge, which was followed by very short abrupt retouch also executed from the ventral aspect. This latter episode interrupts a misty patina which had accumulated on other …

Grey flint with cortex serrated implement. Flake with two parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side leaving a strip of cortex along one edge, and ripples on the ventral surface. Very fine serrations, more easily felt than observed, may be formed by very abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect along the long edge opposite that with cortex retained. Patches of misty patina may suggest the object was exposed to weathering for a period after its deposition. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Black Flint with cortex. Possible serrated implement. Long triangular section flake with pressure flaked notches along all three arises. The probably deliberate working is supplemented by numerous scars caused by impact on these edges, rather than adjacent to them. The retention of cortex is sometimes seen as a trait of Mesolithic material, but here cannot have assisted the use of the object. One or both ends may also have seen use as awls. Grey flint with cortex, serrated implement. A small flake with long narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of the ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge, producing tiny pointed teeth, c.5 per cm. Cortex is retained along the opposite edge, perhaps enabling pressure to be brought to bear on the cutting edge. Patches of misty patina on struck surfaces suggest the object has endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 24.…

Brown flint serrated implement. A small irregular flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of its undulating ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one straight edge, producing a fine cutting edge. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2500-2350 BC Length: 26.4mm, Width: 25.4mm, Thickness: 6.2mm, Weight: 3.57gms

Flint probable serrated implement. A thin triangular flake with possibly reformed cortex trimmed from its dorsal side along one straight edge, a bulbar ventral surface, and with subsequent short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect producing serrations spaced at c.5 per cm along that edge. Dense creamy patina suggests the object has subsequently endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment. Length: 24.7mm, Width: 27.8mm, Thickness: 4.7mm, Weight: 3.07gms

Chocolate brown flint of good quality, serrated implement fragment. A flake with three long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a slightly concave ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the longest straight edge, forming serrations so fine they are more readily felt than observed. What remains of the opposite long edge bears very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect, forming a further cutting edge. One end of the tool is broken obliquely, with the loss of part of this edge. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7…

Flint serrated implement. Long flake with long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb and slight concavity on its ventral. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect follows one long edge; other edge damage is probably the result of fortuitous impacts. The object has accumulated a dense creamy patina with iron stained patches overall, and suggests the object has endured prolonged exposure after itas deposition. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 61.1mm, Width: 16.2mm, Thickness: 9.4mm, Weight: 8.90gms.

Pale grey flint serrated implement. Small oval-ended flake with broad parallel flakes trimmed from its dorsal side and with ripples on the ventral. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a curved side edge, producing serrations so fine they are more easily felt than observed. Patches of misty patina may suggest the object was exposed for a period after its deposition. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 22.9mm, Width: 17.5mm, Thickness: 4.1mm, Weight: 1.88gms.

Buff grey flint serrated implement fragment. Small flake with long narrow parallel bladelets struck from its dorsal side and a flat ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch probably executed from the dorsal aspect followed one or possibly both long edges, producing serrations which are so fine as to be more readily felt than observed. The development of a thick white patina suggests the object endured prolonged exposure after its deposition. One end is broken after the patina had accumulated, and minor edge damage overlying the putative serrated edge/s is also probably fortuitous. S…
