Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey semi-translucent flint possible oblique or transverse arrowhead. A thin sub-triangular flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and a slightly concave ventral surface with a bulb at one end, which is chipped, probably recently. The bulb would have been the site at which an arrowhead would be hafted. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2500-2350 BC Length: 20.9mm, Width: 20.0mm, Thickness: 2.7mm, Weight: 1.42gms

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North East Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Honey coloured semi-translucent flint with cortex. Possible saw fragment. Long flake with two long parallel flake or cortex removal scars on its dorsa aspect, and a bulb of percussion and ripples on the ventral. Fine pressure flaking executed from both sides produced a finely serrated and probably subsequently worn cutting edge along the convex curve of one side; the more prominent flaking opposite this is the result of fortuitous impacts. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 32.5mm, Width: 17.3mm, Thickness: 4.2mm, Weight: 3.45gms

Brown cloudy opaque flint of good quality. Possible flint knife or saw. Three long parallel flake removal scars on the dorsal aspect meet at the rounded end of a long straight sided flake; the ventral side bears a small bulb of percussion defining the round end described above. Fine retouch down both long sides executed from the dorsal side gives a very finely serrated double cutting edge. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic, 7000-3500 BC. Black flint with cortex spot, possibly collected from the East Coast, serrated implement. Long curved flake with long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a concave rippled ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch, more easily felt than observed, and executed from the dorsal aspect, follows the longest edge, and is perhaps supplemented by damage along the same edge producing tiny conchoidal scars. Dark grey- brown flint serrated implement. A thin sub-ovoid flake with narrow and broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of a slightly concave ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the longest edge. Both ends are also lightly battered. This coastal context has produced a number of finely worked early tools in dark, often brownish, varieties of non-local flint. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Dark brown flint of high quality with cortex. Scraper. Possibly a nosed scraper, of plano convex form achieved by pressure flaking of cortex from around the curved edge, and the detaching of the flint from core, though the order in which these tasks were executed is uncertain. The bulb of percussion is lost, probably to recent damage. The dark brown tint of the flint is unusual for tools found in northern Lincolnshire, though this reporter has seen well-made Early Neolithic tools of similar material in the more southerly part of the county. Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North East Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey-brown flint with re-formed cortex, scraper. An irregular flake with broad flakes struck from its original dorsal surface and with a bulbar ventral surface. The latter has acquired a white patina from exposure to a calcareous environment on its ventral side, and a sandy cortex re-formed across the dorsal side. After a significant interval of time, the flake was reused and cortex was interrupted by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect, following a curving edge. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 42.1mm, Width: 34.3mm, Thickness: 9mm, Weight: 12.01gms

Grey flint with cortex, possible scraper, as kindly suggested by the finder. An irregular flake perhaps naturally detached as a pot lid frost-fracture, but with the cortex or re-formed cortex trimmed by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect. Suggested date: possibly Early Bronze Age, 2350-1600 BC Length: 26.4mm, Width: 28.8mm, Thickness: 6.4mm, Weight: 5.18gms

Dark mottled brown Flint of good quality, saw. Long plano-convex flake with long parallel flake removal scars on its convex dorsal aspect, a bulb of percussion at one end on the ventral aspect where the flake was removed from core. Fine pressure flaked retouch, mainly executed from the dorsal aspect, extends almost all round the flake, conferring a very finely serrated edge. The quality of both the material selected and its working, especially the controlled removal of long flakes, suggests an Early Neolithic date. The recent re-dating of the Early Neolithic to 4000-3500 BC may accomm…

Grey semi-translucent Flint of high quality. Saw. Flake with long hard hammer flake removal scars across all of the dorsal aspect, and with a marked bulb of percussion on the ventral aspect where it has been removed from the core. Subsequent working was probably pressure flaking around the edges executed from the dorsal aspect. This is part of a small group of objects of apparently similar function - perhaps the cutting of skin or sinew - reported from the same location, perhaps elements of a specialist tool kit lost together. This suggests the group deserves to be considered as a fin…

Dark mottled brown Flint of good quality, cf. NLM-FEE5D1 Saw, of sub-triangular plano-convex section along its blade, which is broken at one end, probably in antiquity and possibly deliberately. A long flake bears two long flake removal scars on its dorsal aspect, and a very pronounced bulb of percussion on the ventral side at its wider end. The 'bulb' describes a forty-five degree angled turn, giving a heavier handle end to the tool. The removal of a further long flake parallel to the flakes removed from the dorsal aspect gives a flat back as one edge, and would serve as finger …

County: North East Lincolnshire

Grey-green flint possible polished knife fragment. A flake with a curving cutting edge [top] with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a hollowed and hackled ventral surface. Multiple shallow concave fractures appear on both sides, and whether these were contemporary with or later than the use of the putative tool is uncertain; similar features are common amongst unworked or naturally battered flints from the vicinity. Suggested date: Late Neolithic, 2700-2350 BC. Length: 41.5mm, Width: 38.7mm, Thickness: 10.7mm, Weight: 9.20gms
