Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A flint piercer. The irregular black coloured flake has patches of white patina forming on the ventral face. Almost all of the dorsal face is covered with a thick cortex. One edge of the flake has been worked into a thick point with semi-abrupt retouch in one direction. The ventral face has some retouch on the long edge opposite the point. The length of the flake is 56.7mm, the width is 43.6mm and the weight is 17.17g.

Dark grey flint with cortex, cloudy white patina on struck surfaces, possible awl or borer. Flake with long parallel flakes removed from its dorsal side and with a small bulb at one end of the ventral. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect may define a triangular point at one end. The extent of patina may suggest a period of post-depositional weathering. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 37mm, Width: 14.8mm, Thickness: 8.8mm, Weight: 4.19gms.

Grey semi-translucent flint of good quality borer. Flake with a broad flake stuck from its dorsal surface and a bulb on the ventral. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one indented edge, defining a small point - though it is uncertain whether this has been narrowed by subsequent damage. The lack of patina may suggest this object was incorporated into a sealed context shortly after its deposition. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 26.3mm, Width: 21.7mm, Thickness: 6.6mm, Weight: 3.26gms.

Dark grey flint with dense milky patina, borer. Irregular flake with broad flakes struck from both sides, and with very short abrupt retouch executed from one side to define a point. The retouch interrupts patina accumulated over the previously struck surfaces, which may suggest the reuse of a fragment of conveniently [for handling in its reworked state] hollowed debitage which had endured prolonged exposure. Both episodes may be of Neolithic date. A larger spall represents more recent adventitious damage. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 37.5mm, Width: 29.4mm, Thic…

Pale grey flint with patches of cloudy patina, borer. Long flake with long broad flake removal scars on its dorsal side and short abrupt retouch on one side of the pointed end which removes patina, suggesting that a flake from earlier working was reused after a sufficient period for the surface to accumulate patchy patination. Dark grey flint with cortex skin, appearing slightly greenish-brown under transmitted light, possibly collected from the East Coast, borer. A flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and a prominent bulb on its ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect defines a hollow next to a projecting point; very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect trims both sides of the point, including a long straight edge [left of the point as presented here] with a positive hinge fracture at its end. There is no patination, so this object may recently h…

Grey flint with cortex spot borer fragment. A small flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a rippled ventral surface. A light misty patina developed over struck surfaces. This is removed by short abrupt retouch defining a small point at the narrow end; a break immediately adjacent was probably incurred after the deposition of the object. The Neolithic could accommodate both primary and secondary episodes of working. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 27.5mm, Width: 26.7mm, Thickness: 5.3mm, Weight: 3.34gms

Grey flint borer. A thin sub-rectangular flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb on the ventral. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect defines a tiny [basal width 3.5mm] point or spur projecting from the middle of one of its shorter sides. Patches of misty patina have developed over all surfaces, more densely so on the ventral side, producing an attractively patterned surface; this arises from exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 22.4mm, Width: 18.4mm, Thickness: 3.9mm, Weight: 1.97gms

Grey flint with cortex spot and re-forming cortex, borer. Rhomboid flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with larger flakes struck from the ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the converging sides of the putative working point. Patches of patina suggest the object has endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment; they are lost along one aris. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 41.5mm, Width: 27.3mm, Thickness: 10.8mm, Weight: 9.33gms

Buff flint borer. Rhomboid flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and a bulbar ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the edges to form a rounded projecting point. Dense milky patina suggests the object has subsequently endured exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 33.1mm, Width: 25mm, Thickness: 6.3mm, Weight: 5.76gms

Pale brown flint possible borer. A thin triangular flake with a tiny triangular point projecting from its shortest side. A pair of flakes were removed from the dorsal side, while the ventral surface is slightly bulbar. Short abrupt retouch delivered from both the dorsal and ventral aspects formed the point, with a further strip of very short abrupt retouch delivered from the ventral aspect along part of one of the longer sides. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 25.6mm, Width: 14.5mm, Thickness: 4.4mm, Weight: 1.15gms
