Grey flint backed blade. A trapezoid flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side by unidirectional hard hammer strike, and with a bulb at the broader end of the ventral surface. The cutting edge lies along the left hand long side of the object as it is viewed from its dorsal side, with the flat edge opposite permitting pressure to be brought to bear. A dense creamy patina indicates that the object has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment after its deposition. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC.

Pale honey coloured flint, backed blade. A small flake with broad and narrow flakes struck from its dorsal side, and with a flat – now chipped – ventral surface. Milky patina which had begun to form over struck surfaces was subsequently removed by limited angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect, along one long edge. The Neolithic period may embrace both the initial and secondary working. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC

Grey flint with cortex, possibly collected from the East Coast, backed blade. Flake with long broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and rippled on its concave ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows both long edges, and both appear to have received some subsequent battering, leaving it now uncertain which side was the original cutting edge. There is the appearance of further scalar retouch executed from the ventral aspect, but this may arise from fortuitous impact. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC.

Pale grey-buff semi-translucent flint, backed blade. Sub-triangular flake with long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side by unidirectional working, an undulating ventral surface with a bulb at its narrower end, and with very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect blunting or roughening one long edge, perhaps to permit pressure to be exerted while using the opposite long edge as a cutting tool. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC.

Flint backed blade fragment. An oval flake with three broad and one narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side, and with a bulb at one end of its undulating ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows part of a curved edge. Part of the thicker part or butt is lost to an ancient break. A dense creamy patina suggests the object subsequently endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC

Flint possible backed blade. An oval flake with broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side, a near-flat ventral surface, and a narrow long flake struck from along one edge of the ventral surface which may have permitted pressure to be exerted on the putative cutting edge opposite. The scalloped or serrated appearance of the cutting edge is perhaps a result of fortuitous edge-on impacts, albeit occuring in antiquity. A dense creamy patina overall suggests the object has subsequently endured a prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC…

Grey-brown flint possible backed blade fragment. A small chip with long narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side, and with a bulb at one end of the ventral surface. A thin strip of cortex may be retained along one long edge, the opposite edge is sharp and possibly finely serrated. Broken, probably recently, at its broader end. Dense creamy patina suggests that this object has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment after its deposition, and before its breakage. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC.

Flint possible backed blade fragment. A thin flake with broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with very slightly concave ventral surface. A straight flat surface opposite the curved putative cutting edge may have permitted pressure to be brought to bear on it. Grey flint with a buff tinge, possibly collected from the East coast, backed blade. A thick triangular flake with a slightly concave ventral surface and a [more recently chipped] platform at its broader end. Invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge, leaving the opposite long edge flat so that pressure could be exerted when using the knife. Dark grey flint with cortex, backed blade. A small chunk of wedge-shaped profile which has experienced two episodes of hard hammer working. Periods of exposure to a calcareous environment promoted the formation of a dense white patina overall, from the difference in the two sides probably after the initial working of the flint, and again after its re-use. The cortex was retained opposite a putative cutting edge formed by these episodes, perhaps to permit force to be brought to bear on the working edge. The original tint of the flint is revealed by fortuitous chips. Suggested date: Neol…

Flint with cortex, possible backed blade, as kindly suggested by the finder. A narrow flake with long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a flat to slightly concave ventral surface. A dense creamy patina suggests the object has endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. The retention of cortex may have permitted pressure to be brought to bear on the opposite long edge, though any use may have been perfunctory or ephemeral. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC

Grey-buff flint with cortex strip, backed blade. A sharp-edged trapezoid flake with broad flake struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at the broad end it its ventral surface with striking platform at the butt of a curved blade. The convex cutting edge bears tiny serrations which are more easily felt than observed, while the cortex strip along the opposite long edge may have permitted pressure to be brought to bear on this. The work was perfunctory and any use probably ephemeral. The flint retains its native tint, which may hint that it has recently been exposed from a sealed depo…

Pale buff flint possible backed blade, as kindly identified by the finder. A thin leaf-shaped flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side, with a narrow striking platform at its broad end, and with a markedly concave ventral surface. A short length of the concave side at its tip bears fine serrations which are more readily felt than observed. The opposite convex edge comprises flat facets arrived at by short hard hammer retouch executed from the dorsal aspect and may have permitted pressure to be brought to bear on the putative cutting edge. The concave form of the flake might …

Very pale grey flint with cortex strip, possible backed blade. A thin oval flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb on its ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a curving edge; cortex is retained opposite to permit force to be brought to bear on the putative cutting edge, and a flat long edge may also have permitted the opposite edge to be similarly used. Pale grey opaque flint with re-forming cortex, possible backed blade fragment. A triangular flake with a bulb and striking platform at one end, and with re-formed cortex trimmed by very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect following one long edge. Black flint, possibly collected from the East coast, possible backed blade. A semi-circular flake retaining marine-derived coating, and with a broad flake struck from its dorsal side, and with a bulbar ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the curved edge. Creamy patina over all struck surfaces suggests the object was subsequently exposed to a calcareous environment, while orange spots suggest its incorporation into gravel. The form is also comparable to that of a thumbnail scraper; in this case, the retention of the coating opposite the working …

Banded tan and white flint with cortex, possible backed blade. The finder kindly suggests this may be a side scraper. A thick flake with narrow flakes removed from its dorsal side and with a tiny bulb at the narrower end of a concave ventral surface.
