Dark grey flint with cortex backed bade, as kindly identified by the finder. Flake with a broad curved flake trimmed from the dorsal side and with a bulb on the ventral. Short abrupt retouch executed in two stages from the ventral aspect, and with a zone between them similarly worked but from the dorsal aspect, forms a cutting edge opposite the retained cortex permitting pressure to be placed on the blade in use. Slight misty patina has developed over the struck surfaces, indicating a short period of exposure after deposition. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: …

Grey flint possible backed blade, as kindly identified by the finder. Triangular section flake with long flakes removed from the dorsal side and the ventral. The ridge between these sites on the ventral side was then trimmed. A cutting edge was formed by very short abrupt retouch alomg one straight edge, executed from the ventral aspect. Other chips probably arise from more recent fortuitous impacts against long edges. A lack of patina may suggest this object was incorporated into a sealed context shortly after its deposition. Flint of uncertain tint, entirely covered by dense creamy patina, backed blade. Triangular section flake with a cutting edge bearing short abrupt retouch, presumably executed from the dorsal aspect, and with further large concavities arising from subsequent fortuitous impacts; both ends truncated, possibly deliberately. The extent of damage and patina may argue the long exposure of this object after its deposition. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Grey flint with cortex and dense creamy patina, backed blade. Flake with broad and parallel flakes trimmed from the dorsal side and with a bulb on the ventral. Short scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a curved edge, which is perhaps truncated by breakage in antiquity. The cortex appears to be retained to permit the exertion of pressure on the back or butt. A chip at the bulb is recent damage. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows one long edge, probably to blunt it, and appears more intermittently along the opposite long edge. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey-brown flint with cortex, backed blade. A flake of wavy profile with a broad flake trimmed from its dorsal side by hard hammer strike and with a bulb at one end of its ventral surface. Invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect defines a sharp-edged notch in one side. The retention of cortex along the opposite edge may have been intended to permit pressure to be brought to bear on this sharp edge. Small scalar flakes lost from along the putative working edge may have arisen from its use, which does not appear to have been prolonged. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4…

Grey flint, appearing brown under transmitted light, with cortex spot and reformed cortex; probable backed blade. A thick flake with covering angled scalar retouch on its dorsal side and with bulbar ventral surface. A straight flat edge bears thin cortex which appears to have re-formed over a previously struck surface. It may have been retained to permit pressure to be exerted on the cutting edge. As this surface may itself have been formed by deliberate working, this would imply a significant lapse of time during which the unfinished object or its parent nodule was exposed to a calc…

Grey-buff translucent flint with cortex, possibly collected from the East Coast; backed blade. A small leaf-shap[ed flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side, and with a gently concave ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the longest edge to form a cutting edge; the opposite long edge retains cortex and would permit pressure to be brought to bear. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 22.2mm, Width: 13.0mm, Thickness: 4.1mm, Weight: 1.27gms

Grey flint with cortex, possible backed blade. Irregular flake with narrow multi-directional flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulbar ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a protruding curved edge; this has received further damage, possibly in the course of its use. Cortex was retained along the opposite or basal [as viewed] edge, probably to permit pressure to be exerted on the cutting edge. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 16.7mm, Width: 34.3mm, Thickness: 7.1mm, Weight: 4.33gms.

Grey buff flint with cortex, backed blade. Leaf-shaped flake with cortex trimmed by a long angled strike on the dorsal surface which produced a rippled surface to the exposed flint, and with a gently concave ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the edge of the exposed flint. Most of the cortex was retained, presumably to enable pressure to be brought to bear on the cutting edge. It appears the tool was made for a left-handed user. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 41.5mm, Width: 16.6mm, Thickness: 3.9mm, Weight: 3.53gms

Grey translucent flint of good quality with cortex strip, appearing honey coloured under transmitted light; backed blade. A small narrow flake with long parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a small bulb at one end of a slightly concave ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the ventral aspect may follow one long edge, though these small scars might have arisen from adventitious impacts. The retention of cortex on the opposite long edge, however, may show this to be deliberate. There is no patina, in contrast to most of the accompanying material. Sugge…

Grey flint, possibly collected from the East Coast, backed blade. A sub-triangular flake with two parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of the ventral surface. The original surface, resembling a fine grey cortex and probably associated with a coastal provenance, is retained along a concave side, permitting pressure to be exerted on the opposite, convex, edge. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. Length: 27.5mm, Width: 16.6mm, Thickness: 5.2mm, Weight: 2.46gms
