Grey semi-translucent flint, of good quality, knife. Plano-convex knapped blade, bearing three long blade removal scars on the dorsal face, and a bulb of percussion on the ventral surface showing where the blade was removed from the core after these long flakes had been removed. This working was probably with hard hammer, but pressure flaked retouch appears along both long edges. The removal of long thin flakes and the selection of apt material tend to indicate an earlier Neolithic date; however, the plano-convex form anticipates later blade and fabricator forms, so a broader date-ran…

Pale brown flint with cortex, knife, as kindly identified by the finder. Leaf-shaped flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of its ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a long curved edge. Misty patina suggests the object was exposed to a calcareous environment for a period after its deposition. Flint or chert, brown coloured and cloudy Tool fragment. Rod of stone, roughly trimmed with a hard hammer; many strokes appear to have been directed from the edges of the object towards its centre. This working has achieved a broad lentoid section. Bill Bee kindly comments that this working has perhaps provided a thumb-rest near the (present) mid-point, and that a sharper end has probably been lost. Dark Grey Flint, high quality, perhaps collected from the East Coast. Knife. Fragment of a flat, possibly discoid, flint knife, with a finely smoothed cutting edge formed by polish extending about 7mm from the edge. The fragment is now sub-triangular, representing a segment from a larger object with breaks on either side. Both upper and lower surfaces bear scars from hard and soft hammer working and pressure flaking, with the edge polished completely smooth on both sides. Semi-Translucent grey flint with cortex, of high quality, knife fragment. Flake of plano-convex section with four long flake removal scars on its dorsal aspect, with cortex at one end and broken at the other. The selection of good flint and its working by removal of long parallel flakes are both characteristic of the Early Neolithic; the retention of cortex might even suggest a Late Mesolithic date, though this reporter is chary of attributing single finds to that period. The good condition of the object may argue its recent disturbance from a hitherto sealed context. Suggested date: …

Grey semi-translucent Flint of high quality, knife. Knapped plano-convex knife with ripples from its initial striking on the ventral flat aspect and with hard hammer working to flatten the crest of its convex side and around it to produce a working blade. The selection of apt material and its assured working suggest an Early Neolithic date, 3500-2900 BC. Length: 45.4mm, Width: 17.0mm, Thickness: 4.3mm, Weight: 3.59gms.

Suggested date: Early Ne…
