Red-brown flint with powdery thin white cortex, possibly collected on the East Coast; core. The distinctive tint may suggest this to be jasper, as kindly suggested by Mike Boyd with reference to another object of similar hue. An irregular nodule with long narrow parallel flakes struck from three sides by multi-directional hard hammer working, and with a further broad flat flake struck from between these. Iron stained flint possible hand axe. A sub-trapezoid nodule trimmed on all sides by hard hammer working which has removed large flakes. There is also a limited zone of battering or crushing at either end. The appearance of retouch noted by the finder may in most cases be ascribed to casual impacts rather than purposeful working. These scars, however, partake of the stained tint of the surface of the object, and must accordingly have arisen in deep antiquity. The edge or aris between faces is usually crisp.
