Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: North East Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark brown flint of good quality with cortex debitage. Thick flake of triangular section with flakes removed from two facets of its dorsal side and faintly rippled and concave on its ventral. A distinctive ripple pattern in low relief appears, presumably arising from retouch executed from the dorsal aspect, at the broader end. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 33.3mm, Width: 13.1mm, Thickness: 9.5mm, Weight: 3.34gms.

Grey-green mottled flint debitage. Thick flake with long parallel flakes removed from the dorsal side, probably using the striking platform at one end as this may be part of a core, and with a bulb or bulbs on the ventral side. Pale grey translucent flint of high quality with cortex. Debitage; flake with a flake removal scar from shallow angled hard hammer working removing cortex on the dorsal aspect, and with a low bulb of percussion and ripples on the ventral side from the striking of flake from core. Other damage is present on the ventral side, probably recent. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 38.5mm, Width: 22.1mm, Thickness: 4.6mm, Weight: 3.64gms.

White patinated flint - on the dorsal side - with a blue tint with cloudy white patina on the ventral. Debitage. The dorsal aspect bears a pair of adjacent flake removal scars of possibly natural origin along with a break at one end, but a bulb of percussion on the ventral side suggests at least the subsequent investigation of its potential for working. The Neolithic period could accommodate both episodes in its long span. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 39mm, Width: 22.6mm, Thickness: 7.5mm, Weight: 5.32gms.

Black glossy flint of high quality with cortex, perhaps collected on the East Coast. Debitage. Flake with two long parallel flake or cortex removal scars on its dorsal; aspect, a prominent striking platform, and a prominent bulb or percussion on the ventral side. Edge and end damage is probably fortuitous, being struck from rather than towards the edge or end. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic to Early Neolithic, 7000-3500 BC. Black glossy flint with cortex, perhaps collected on the East Coast. Debitage. Fragment with cortex at one flat end, and bearing long parallel flake removal scars on its dorsal aspect; a bulb of percussion on the ventral side suggests this was detached from its core by hard hammer impact at the other end. Toffee coloured clouded and opaque flint. Knife. Narrow rod shaped blade. Four very long parallel flake removal scars on the dorsal aspect confer an angular plano-convex profile; very faint rippling on the ventral side shows where the flake was detached from a core. Some slight abrasions along the edge have been smoothed. Though the object has a glossy surface overall, possibly a result of curation in antiquity, the context could equally suggest this appealing finish to be the result of wave action. Kevin Leahy kindly comments as follows: 'An interesting object. Without retouch t…

Grey flint, possibly collected from the East Coast; debitage. A small flake with broad flakes struck from its ?dorsal side by hard hammer working. The ?ventral surface bears narrow parallel flake removal scars within a hollowed area. A strip of cortex whose thin fine character may suggest the coastal origin of the flint appears along one edge. The finder kindly suggests that the grey tint may identify this as a Wolds-type flint, perhaps incorporated in glacial Drift, and one which has recently endured only scant exposure to a discolouring local environment. Grey-green flint with cortex, possible debitage.
