Dark grey flint with cortex possible knife. Flake with broad flakes trimmed from the dorsal side and with a bulb on the ventral. Very short abrupt retouch along a slightly concave curving edge has produced a finely serrated cutting edge, more easily felt than observed. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Grey green opaque flint with cortex borer. Sub-triangular flake with a broad flake trimmed from the dorsal side and a slightly convex ventral surface; one side of the flake is formed by a positive hinged fracture and the other side may be lightly worn by handling. Invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect trims an area of cortex, possibly affording a thumb rest. The pointed end of the object appears lightly polished by wear. Object type: SAW
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North East Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark mottled brown Flint of good quality, saw. Long plano-convex flake with long parallel flake removal scars on its convex dorsal aspect, a bulb of percussion at one end on the ventral aspect where the flake was removed from core. Fine pressure flaked retouch, mainly executed from the dorsal aspect, extends almost all round the flake, conferring a very finely serrated edge. The quality of both the material selected and its working, especially the controlled removal of long flakes, suggests an Early Neolithic date. The recent re-dating of the Early Neolithic to 4000-3500 BC may accomm…

Grey semi-translucent Flint of high quality. Saw. Flake with long hard hammer flake removal scars across all of the dorsal aspect, and with a marked bulb of percussion on the ventral aspect where it has been removed from the core. Subsequent working was probably pressure flaking around the edges executed from the dorsal aspect. This is part of a small group of objects of apparently similar function - perhaps the cutting of skin or sinew - reported from the same location, perhaps elements of a specialist tool kit lost together. This suggests the group deserves to be considered as a fin…

Dark mottled brown Flint of good quality, cf. NLM-FEE5D1 Saw, of sub-triangular plano-convex section along its blade, which is broken at one end, probably in antiquity and possibly deliberately. A long flake bears two long flake removal scars on its dorsal aspect, and a very pronounced bulb of percussion on the ventral side at its wider end. The 'bulb' describes a forty-five degree angled turn, giving a heavier handle end to the tool. The removal of a further long flake parallel to the flakes removed from the dorsal aspect gives a flat back as one edge, and would serve as finger …

County: North East Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark brown flint of high quality with cortex. Scraper. Possibly a nosed scraper, of plano convex form achieved by pressure flaking of cortex from around the curved edge, and the detaching of the flint from core, though the order in which these tasks were executed is uncertain. The bulb of percussion is lost, probably to recent damage. The dark brown tint of the flint is unusual for tools found in northern Lincolnshire, though this reporter has seen well-made Early Neolithic tools of similar material in the more southerly part of the county. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. …

Opaque grey flint, patinated on the ventral side only. Flint knife fragment. There are four long parallel flake removal scars on the dorsal aspect conferring an angular plano-convex section, and part of a bulb of percussion on the ventral. Broken at one or both ends. The partial serration of the cutting edges is almost certainly a result of fortuitous damage. Suggested date: Early Neolithic, 4000-3500 BC. White patinated flint - on the dorsal side - with a blue tint with cloudy white patina on the ventral. Debitage. The dorsal aspect bears a pair of adjacent flake removal scars of possibly natural origin along with a break at one end, but a bulb of percussion on the ventral side suggests at least the subsequent investigation of its potential for working. The Neolithic period could accommodate both episodes in its long span. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC. Length: 39mm, Width: 22.6mm, Thickness: 7.5mm, Weight: 5.32gms.

Grey flint with cortex spot, possible scraper. A small thick sub-rectangular flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb on the ventral surface. Angled scalar retouch follows two adjacent edges. The finder kindly suggests an identification as a gunflint and this was reported along with a pair of questionable examples. In this case, the object would perhaps be better regarded as a lightly worked scraper. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 24.2mm, Width: 23.7mm, Thickness: 8.2mm, Weight: 5.47gms

Brown flint adze. A thick oval flake with rounded angled ends and a broad [15.8mm] flat facet along one long edge. Both sides bear covering angled retouch executed with hard hammer, and traces of battering along that long edge opposite a flattened facet. Edge-on impact scars occur here, suggesting some adapted use of the tool with the flat facet enabling pressure to be brought to bear on a working edge. An elongated side facet might also appear on a Neolithic polished axehead. The surface is smoothed, possibly from rolling in surf. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 12…
