Dark grey flint with cortex, scraper. Nodule fragment with limited patches of milky patina at the sites of primary working, perhaps of Neolithic date, which was followed by a long period of weathering. This surface was nearly removed by subsequent multangular hard hammer working, with limited angled scalar retouch along one aris. There is also some battering along this working edge. The casual execution of reworking may suggest a Bronze Age date for that episode, while a lack of subsequent patination may suggest the object was incorporated into a sealed context shortly after its final…

Flint possible scraper. Triangular-section flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and a conchoidal surface on the ventral. Marks along a long curving edge may represent chipping rather than retouch. The object is covered by dense milky patina which suggests it has endured a long period of exposure. Suggested date: Unknown, Late Mesolithic to Bronze Age, 7000-800 BC. Length: 53.7mm, Width: 28.4mm, Thickness: 14.3mm, Weight: 24.21gms.

Flint scraper. A small thumbnail scraper with cortex remaining on its dorsal surface and with covering angled scalar retouch executed from the ventral aspect. The struck surfaces are covered by dense creamy patina, suggesting prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment, and with orange spotting which may suggest its subsequent incorporation in gravels. The form is usually ascribed to the Early Bronze Age but the condition of the flint might point to an earler date. Suggested date: Unknown, Late Mesolithic to Early Bronze Age,7000-1600 BC. Dark grey flint with cortex spot, scraper. A thick flake with broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulbar ventral surface. Invasive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the long curving edge. The material might hint at an earlier date, the trimming of the dorsal side would be apt to Neolithic work, while the retouch may suggest a later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age date. Suggested date: Unknown, Late Mesolithic to Early Bronze Age, 7000-1600 BC. Length: 23.5mm, Width: 32.1mm, Thickness: 8.6mm, Weight: 8.10gms

Flint with reformed cortex possible scraper. A long irregular flake with a broad flake struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of a gently undulating ventral surface. Cortex has reformed over a rounded end, where possible scalar retouch executed from the ventral aspect also appears. The opposite end is lightly battered. A dense creamy patina overall suggests the object has endured long exposure to a calcareous environment; orange spots might suggest its incorporation in gravel. The re-formed cortex might suggest an earlier date than the apparently casual working would c…

Dark brown flint nodule with cortex, scraper. A round flint pebble or nodule of high quality, with invasive angled scalar retouch which has removed eight large long and mostly parallel flakes in an episode of skilled and perfunctory working from a single direction. The cutting edge produced has seen some use as evidenced by its light battering. The rapid removal of larger flakes might usually suggest a late date; however, the selection of this material, which is imported to the area, might rather point to an earlier date and to its economical rather than haphazard working. The notable …

Orange iron-stained flint with cortex, scraper. A thick dentiform flake with broad and narrow flakes struck from its dorsal side and a bulb at the broader end of the ventral surface. A curving notch was formed by retouch of one long edge executed from the dorsal aspect, retaining cortex to permit pressure to be brought to bear on that working edge. The orange surface colour suggests the object was subsequently incorporated into gravels. The finder kindly identifies this tool as a Clactonian notched scraper, by reference to Butler, C. 2005, Prehistoric Flintwork, Tempus. Suggested date:…
