Pale grey flint with re-forming cortex, possible debitage. Flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a tiny bulb or positive hinge fracture at the narrow end of its ventral surface, which is slightly concave. Patches of misty patina may suggest a period of exposure to a calcareous environment, the cortex may have re-formed during immersion. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 28.8mm, Width: 18.4mm, Thickness: 6.3mm, Weight: 3.41gms

Flint possible arrowhead. Lozengiform or rhomboid thick flake with broad flakes struck from both dorsal and ventral surfaces; an unusually symmetrical object although thicker than the leaf-shaped arrowheads of the early Neolithic. Either end could have served as point or cutting edge, and fine serrations appear on the curved end and perhaps along the sides as well, so this may have been mounted ‘inverted’ as an oblique arrowhead. A dense white patina may suggest the object has endured long exposure to a calcareous environment. Suggested date: possibly Late Neolithic, 2700-2…

Opaque pale brown flint debitage fragment. A small thick chunk with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a flat ventral surface. Intrusive angled scalar retouch executed from the dorsal aspect appears at the ends of the object, while concave chips suggest hard hammer retouch executed from the ventral aspect, with subsequent battering of the thin ?cutting edge this produced. Unusually for flint from this area, there is no trace of subsequent patination, which might suggest the object was immediately incorporated into a sealed deposit from which it has only recently been dis…

Pale brown flint serrated implement. A sub-rectangular flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at one end of a slightly concave ventral surface.  Very fine serrations, more readily felt than observed, follow one long straight edge. Pale buff flint blade. A small thin flake with narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with an undulating ventral surface. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect forms a small [length 6.5mm] notch on one side. Misty patina then developed, suggesting the object endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. This patina was then removed by very short abrupt retouch following one long edge to form a cutting edge. The notch may also have been reworked at this time. The Neolithic period could probably accommodate both episodes, though an older flake m…

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint - appearing grey-buff under transmitted light - debitage. A long narrow flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and a bulb at one end of a slightly concave ventral surface. The other end of the ventral surface bears a prominent positive hinge fracture. A single angled hard-hammer draft delivered from the dorsal aspect has produced an angled chisel end here, though there is no sign of this or indeed any of the edges of the object having been put to use as a tool. The lack of surface patina may suggest its recent exposure from a sealed deposit; …

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Dark grey flint with reformed cortex spot, lithic implement. A small triangular point with long narrow flakes struck from its dorsal side and a concave ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows the long edges, producing serrations which are more readily felt than observed. Ridging towards the pointed end, the relict of a positive hinge fracture, might have enhanced the use of that end as a boring tool. A lack of surface patina may suggest the recent exposure of this object. Suggested date: Neolithic, 4000-2350 BC Length: 28.6mm, Width: 20.3mm, …
