Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Orange flint with brown shiny patches, possible debitage, as kindly identified by the finder, probably with large flakes removed overall by multangular hard hammer working. The finder notes this as a rare appearance of a distinctive orange-brown flint or chert, a material only hitherto recognised as the material selected to make the largest scraper to be reported from the vicinity. An early date is speculatively advanced. Suggested date: possibly Late Palaeolithic, 40000-10000 BC
Length: 46.6mm, Width: 48.4mm, Thickness: 12mm, Weight: 20.89gms

Orange flint with iron-stain spotting, core, as kindly identified by the finder. A chunk with opposed concave faces and with scars from the probably unidirectional removal of long parallel flakes using a now restricted striking platform. The staining may suggest the object was subsequently incorporated into gravels. Suggested date: Late Palaeolithic, 40000-10000 BC

Orange iron-stained flint, core, as kindly identified by the finder. A thin chunk with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side using a small platform at one end, and with a markedly concave ventral surface below the platform. Iron staining suggests the object has subsequently been incorporated into gravels. Suggested date: Late Palaeolithic, 40000-10000 BC.

Orange iron-stained flint debitage. A short triangular section flake with two broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a flat ventral surface. The iron staining suggests the object has been incorporated into gravels; the finder kindly suggests an early date may be evidenced by the surface condition. Suggested date: Late Palaeolithic, 40000-10000 BC.

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Orange iron-stained flint with cortex, scraper. A thick dentiform flake with broad and narrow flakes struck from its dorsal side and a bulb at the broader end of the ventral surface. A curving notch was formed by retouch of one long edge executed from the dorsal aspect, retaining cortex to permit pressure to be brought to bear on that working edge. The orange surface colour suggests the object was subsequently incorporated into gravels. The finder kindly identifies this tool as a Clactonian notched scraper, by reference to Butler, C. 2005, Prehistoric Flintwork, Tempus. Suggested date:…

Orange iron-stained flint core fragment, as kindly identified by the finder. A broad chunk with broad and narrow flake removal scars from probably unidirectional working from a large striking platform. The finder suggests an early date, indicated not only by the form of the object but also its surface coloration. Probably chipped in deep antiquity. Suggested date: Late Palaeolithic, 40000-10000 BC

Patinated cream-coloured flint with iron staining, debitage. A flake with broad parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a bulb at the narrower end of its ventral surface. The surface colouration arises from rolling in gravels. An early date is suggested by the finder, comparing this surface with that of the many other dateable objects from the vicinity. Suggested date: Late Palaeolithic, 40,000-10,000 BC

Pale cream-buff flint possible knife fragment. Sub-triangular flake with broad flakes struck from its dorsal side and smooth across most of the ventral surface, save where interrupted by one long flake-removal scar. Short abrupt retouch or edge-on damage follows the longest edge. The straight upper edge [as illustrated] has the smooth edge of a positive hinge fracture on one side. Overall creamy patina and rust spotting may suggest the object was subsequently incorporated into gravel. Now smooth to the touch, probably due to water-rolling. Suggested date: possibly Early to Middle Palae…

Flint possible edge-polished fragment. A chunk of lentoid section with an apparently curving cutting edge with polishing immediately adjacent to it, but otherwise bearing the scars of covering scalar working entailing hard hammer removal of a small number of large flakes. Though the putative cutting edge is crisp, the object is broken c.40mm behind it. All surfaces, including the putative fracture surface, are identically covered by a dense creamy patina and are iron stained, features suggesting a prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment followed by incorporation in gravels. Thi…

Flint debitage. A large curved flake with broad and narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side, and with a concave ventral surface. The surface bears dense buff-to-cream coloured patina overall, suggesting it has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment. The ventral surface bears metallic scratches. The finder reports the object was incorporated in the gravel base of an excavated Iron Age or Romano-British ditch, and he infers that the scratches are from the trowel cleaning of the ditch bottom. His own researches suggest the object form may be of Middle Palaeolit…

Grey flint with cortex debitage. An irregular small chunk with broad flakes of cortex and a longer narrower flake trimmed by hard hammer from the dorsal side and with a rippled ventral surface. A dense creamy patina has developed over all struck surfaces, suggesting prolonged period of exposure to a calcareous environment; this is glossed, perhaps by wind-blown sand - 'desert gloss' - occurring in a periglacial environment. The patina has been removed by more recent and probably random impacts. Suggested date: Upper Palaeolithic, 40,000-10,000 BC

Object type: RETOUCHED FLAKE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire

Probably a Upper Palaeolithic flint blade. The heavily patinated white flake has no signs of any retouch and the ventral face is plain. This blade is likely to represent a late glacial industry. The length is 62.0mm, the width is 25.4mm, the thickness is 7.6mm and the weight is 13.04g.

Object type: HANDAXE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Published
Probably a tip fragment from a Lower Palaeolithic Acheulian hand axe. The opaque mid brown flint bears traces of polish all over. The axe is bifacially worked and has some retouch on one side (area a). It is likely that the axe was broken in antiquity. The length is 62.1mm, the width is 37.6mm, the thickness is 24.4mm and the weight is 45.97g.

Probably a Late Palaeolithic naturally backed knife. The flint blade is completely covered with creamy opaque white patina with patches of dark grey. The dorsal face has three arises and the upper part of the left edge has oblique truncation produced by abrupt retouch. The proximal end of the dorsal face has an off centred tang created with short abrupt retouch and the tip of the distal end is missing. The ventral face has slight ripples marks and a small bulb of percussion. The length is 53.1mm, the width is 23.2mm, the thickness is 5.7mm and the weight is 5.98g.
