Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Grey flint scraper. A roughly L-shaped flake with long narrow parallel flakes struck from its dorsal side and with a slightly hollowed ventral surface, both characteristic features of flint work of the later Mesolithic period. Misty white patina has developed over struck faces, suggesting the object has endured a period of exposure to a calcareous environment. This patina is interrupted by short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect, with limited subsequent adventitious chipping, probably to form a notched scraper. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 34.…

Dark grey flint with cortex scraper. A thick flake with long narrow parallel flakes trimmed from its dorsal side by invasive angled retouch and with a bulb at one end of a markedly concave ventral surface. Either use of the side or adventitious chipping has interrupted a patchy misty patina over struck areas, which suggests the object has endured a limited period of exposure to a calcareous environment. Flint core. A pyramidal core with a flat striking platform and scars all around from the removal of broad and narrow flakes by unidirectional working. A dense creamy patina overall indicates the object has endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment after its deposition. Grey-green flint with cortex probable tranchet axehead. Subsequent angled scalar retouch either tidied or sharpened this cutting edge. Suggested date: Early Mesolithic, 10,000-7000 BC. Length: 82.6mm, Width: 43.4mm, Thickness: 19.2mm, Weight: 49.64gms.

Dark brown flint with cortex, debitage. Four flakes of distinctively coloured flint reported together as from the same location, together with a Late Mesolithic core (NLM-318B30). The characteristics of this group include hard-hammer trimming of cortex, the removal of parallel flakes, and in one case a markedly concave ventral surface. Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Toffee-coloured brown flint with cortex strip, possibly collected from the East Coast, lithic implement. A small crescentic flake with large flakes struck from its dorsal side by hard hammer and with a bulbar ventral surface. Very short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect follows a concave curving edge. Further short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect also defines a protruding point at one end of the longer worked edge to form a boring tool. Suggested date: Late Mesolithic, 7000-4000 BC. Length: 27.3mm, Width: 31.8mm, Thickness: 5.7mm, Weight: 3.36gms

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Toffee-coloured brown flint of high quality, possible scraper. A thick curving flake with a concave ventral surface. Broad parallel flakes have been struck from the dorsal side; the ventral surface is concave with a small pronounced bulb and tiny striking platform at one end, and gently rippled beyond this. Short abrupt retouch executed from the dorsal aspect appears at the opposite end to the bulb, perhaps to form a small nosed scraper. Both long edges are battered; this has given the appearance of more extensive scalar retouch, but the impact scars actually originate on the edges, r…

Object type: DEBITAGE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: North Lincolnshire

Flint debitage. Seven small chunks and flakes, all debris from hard hammer working. The long narrow parallel flakes struck from the dorsal side of the smallest flake suggest a Mesolithic date for that piece at least; similar marks on the ventral surface of another [the first in the second row] are similar. The rest could arise from either Mesolithic or Neolithic working. However, the dense creamy patina suggests the objects have endured prolonged exposure to a calcareous environment, while the orange iron spotting suggests their subsequent incorporation into gravel. This history would…
