Object type: KNIFE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete knapped flint probable knife dating to the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age, c. 3000-1500 BC. It is oval in plan view and broadly plano-convex in section, with a flattened underside and rounded upper surface. It has been manufactured on a tertiary flake of banded medium grey flint, which is unpatinated. Bifacially worked, invasive scalar retouch is visible on both faces. It measures 46.11mm long, 25.39mm wide at its midpoint, and 9.59mm thick at its midpoint. It weighs 12.97g. C.f with an example published in Butler (2005) but of slightly different form. Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete knapped flint leaf-shaped arrowhead dating to the Neolithic period, c. 4000-3000 BC. It is broadly sub-triangular in plan with a straight, even profile that tapers towards its tip, and has been manufactured on a flake of very fine translucent light grey flint. Both faces of the arrowhead demonstrate heavily invasive covering retouch achieved by the means of pressure flaking, which has removed all of the original flake surfaces. The arrowhead has suffered post-depositional edge damage down its lateral edges, and part of the butt has broken away, leaving it square instead …

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete retouched flint flake, probably dating from the later Neolithic to Middle Bronze Age (c. 3000-1500 BC). It has been worked onto a flake of unpatinated dark black flint, with the platform partially broken away. A single prominent dorsal arrise is visible. The dorsal left mesial edge demonstrates intensive working, with scalar abrupt retouch visible that forms a deep notch and convergent point at the distal end of the piece. Post-depositional edge damage is visible on the right hand side of the piece. Preserved in fresh condition, it measures 38.19mm long down its percussi…

A complete and unfinished leaf-shaped arrowhead dating to the Neolithic period, c. 4000-300 BC. It is broadly leaf-shaped in plan view and plano convex in section, with a rounded upper surface. Secondary working in the form of pressure flaking is evinced on the upper surface, which has been used to form the right hand edge, tip, and rough-out the left hand edge of the arrowhead. The underside is completely plain and demonstrates no modification whatsoever. The butt is unformed, and the majority of the piece retains its original surface, with only the aforementioned areas demonstrating…

A complete flint Mesolithic tranchet axe. It is elongated ovoid in shape; long and narrow with a slightly wider blade end. Both faces are convex and it is roughly triangular in cross-section with an off-centre ridge running down the centre one face only, while the other face is more flattened. Both faces have been reshaped using invasive, scaled retouch producing large scars largely running inwards towards the centre. There is a small amount of cortex covering one scar on one face. A large triangular transverse 'tranchet' flake has been removed from one side of the cutting end. The fl…

A complete flint Mesolithic tranchet axe. It is elongated ovoid in shape; long and narrow with a slightly wider blade end. Both faces are convex and it is roughly lozenge-shaped in cross-section with an off-centre ridge running down the centre of each one. Both faces have been reshaped using invasive, scaled retouch producing large scars. A large triangular transverse 'tranchet' flake has been removed from one side of the cutting end. The flint is dark grey in colour with lighter mottled patination covering much of both faces and some orange staining. Length: 112.10mm, width: 34.73…

An incomplete flint polished axe or chisel(?) of Neolithic date. It is struck from a mottled yellow/white flint, snapped at the butt end, and with extensive later(?) reworking or damage of the body of the axe. The relatively narrow cutting edge is pointed-oval in cross section, crescentic in for, and with polished surfaces. The body of the object tapers sharply towards the butt end, is lozenge shaped in section and has extensive irregular flake removal on all surfaces. Traces of polishing are visible on both faces, but the flake removal dominates. It measures 133.99mm in length, 45.32…

A patinated flint long flake or blade of possible final Upper Palaeolithic to Mesolithic date. It is struck from a grey/brown flint with partially patinated blue/grey surfaces. The proximal end has a hinge fracture and the distal end has a small area of unpatinated semi-abrupt and scaled retouch on the ventral face. The dorsal face has parallel flake or blade scars and both edges appear to have sigs of possible 'bruising'. It measures 108.66mm in length, 43.94mm in width, 14.77mm in thickness, and 50.90g in weight. This is a flint long flake or blade. It forms one part of a larger …

A patinated flint blade of possible final Upper Palaeolithic to Mesolithic date. It is struck from a grey/brown flint with patinated blue/grey surfaces and small bulb of percussion. The dorsal face has parallel blade scars giving the object a triangulr cross section, but seemingly no additional retouch. It measures 158mm in length, 30.55mm in width, 13.05mm in thickness, and 48.54g in weight. This is a flint blade. It forms one part of a larger assemblage of flint blades, flakes, and tools, all found together on spoil excavated from a single pit during the construction of a soakawa…

It measures 130.99mm in length, 53.22mm in width, 21.03mm in thickness, and 125.31g in weight. This is a flint blade. It forms one part of a larger assemblage of flint blades, flakes, and tools, all found together on spoil excavated from a single pit duri…
