Record ID: NMS-CF8172
Object type: AXE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Flaked axe, of mottled flint now impressively patinated orange, brown and black from exposure to iron oxides from deposition in sands and gravels, all flake scars appear to be relatively hard hammer struck with large negative bulbs of percussion visable to some of the flake removals. The cutting edge appears to be damaged in antiquity with the steep angles produced from this being similarly patinated to the rest of the axe. Broadly Neolithic, 4,000 to 2350 BC.

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Secondary, sub-trapezoidal sectioned, hard hammer struck flake, in fresh condition but patinated brown with iron oxide concretions to the ventral face. The distal end and right lateral side (when viewed with from the dorsal face with the platform uppermost) is formed by original thermal (frost) fractures from the core. The left lateral edge is a hinged flake scar, the central face on this side appears to be a bi-polar flake scar, possibly produced by the anvil technique?  The slightly hooked distal edge (edge angle circa. 75 degrees) has fine use wear along its length with tiny fl…

Record ID: NMS-9679B9
Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: PALAEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Secondary, hard hammer struck flake, of black and grey flint, now lightly patininated orange and white, the edges are broken at a steep angle resembling retouch, though this is later damage as they lack the same degree of patination. Three large flakes have been previously removed to the dorsal face, one overlaps another and looks like part of the same flake scar. The wide platform has four incipient cones of percussion from trying to remove this flake, the last one (very close to a previous blow) clearly "did the job". Thin, weathered cortex is extant to the distal end of the dorsal …

Small tertiary, hard hammer struck spear or knife-like implement, of sub-triangular plan form and of patinated dark orange/brown flint. Record ID: NMS-905D34
Object type: AXEHEAD ROUGHOUT
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Small, asymmetrical biface, all flake removals are hard hammer struck, of orange patinated flint, with some recent damage to both ends and one side revealing the original mottled grey flint. Possibly a trial piece or reject of an attempt at an axe or adze. No tranchet flake removal to the "cutting" edge noted. With no diagnostic features, a broad date range of Mesolithic to Neolithic is likely.

Record ID: NMS-0D1BB3
Object type: ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Suffolk
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Late Neolithic chisel type arrowhead, made from an unpatinated tertiary flake of grey/brown flint; with the (now removed) bulb of percussion angled towards the right side of the ventral face of the broad cutting edge. The lateral edges expand from a 10 mm butt and are semi-invasively and bifacially flaked, and the cutting edge is similarly reouched only on the dorsal face, one corner of this edge is missing, presumably broken in antiquity as the break is glossy. Otherwise it is a good and large example of the type.

Near complete Mesolithic to Neolithic adze. Grey mottled flint with thin chocolate brown patination, one patch of light coloured weathered cortex remaining on dorsal face. The object is triangular sectioned and in slightly rolled condition and appears to have been the sea for some time. Although largely undamaged there is part of the cutting edge missing so it is unclear if this is a tranchet axe of the Mesolithic period or an adze of the Neolithic period.
