Object type: BACKED BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Nottinghamshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Pale grey flint with cortex backed blade. A sub-triangular flake with a broad flake struck from its dorsal side, and with a positive hinge fracture along one long edge. A bulbar ventral surface has had about three large flakes removed by hard hammer strike, the last being in the same position as the first flake trimmed to produce a robust triangular section cutting edge. The rounded surface of the hinged fracture would enable pressure to be brought to bear on the opposite putative working edge. Suggested date: Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age, 2700-1600 BC Length: 55.5mm, Width: 47.…

A flint flake of probable Neolithic to early Bronze Age date (c. 4000-1600 BC). It is sub-triangular in shape, and mid-brown in colour. It appears to have been struck off a tertiary flake, as none of the abraded nodule cortex remains at its distal end. At the proximal end is a large striking platform with a bulb of percussion on the ventral face. The ventral surface also shows widely spaced conchoidal ripple marks. The dorsal face has negative flake scars from the removal of previous flakes possibly in the form of blades or bladelets. Length: 26.83 mm, w…

A patinated flint implement, possibly a reworked natural flake or earlier debitage. Dr Kevin Leahy says: "the utilisation of natural flint was a practice characteristic of the Later Bronze Age and Iron Age". The surface shows a recorticated patina with what may be iron staining. Rough scaled retouching along the edge seems to cut this recortication, suggesting re-use. There is what may be a burin at the tip of the implement. Length 51.9 mm, width 16.7 mm, thickness 8.8 mm. The object is broadly pentagonal in plan and broadly D shaped in section. Around 95% of the remaining cortex covers the ventral face of the tool. There are two removal scars on the surface on the left side, the lower removal is broadly triangular in plan and the upper removal is broadly square with pronounced…

A complete knapped lithic implement of probably the Neolithic to Bronze Age period, dating from c.4000BC - c. 800BC. The object is probably a secondary flake removed from a larger core, and then subjected to further working. The object is broadly semi circular in plan and triangular in section. Around 30% of the cortex still remains on the left side of the dorsal face. The dorsal face shows evidence of striking from multiple platforms for the removal of small flakes or chips at varying angles. All scars exhibit evidence of conchoidal ripple marks in the surface, most of these are q…

The object is broadly rectangular in plan and a tapered D shape in section. The dorsal face has two broadly rectangular removal scars on the surface, the removal on the right side is narrower than the one on the left, and both exhibit conchoidal ripple marks radiating from the striking platform at the proximal end.
