Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete probable flint 'Thames Pick' type Tranchet axe head dating to the Mesolithic period, c. 9000-4000 BC.
The object is incomplete with the central section surviving and fresh breaks at each end. It is an irregular sub-rectangular shape in plan and roughly triangular in cross-section. The object has long conchoidal flaking covering much of the object with a small patch of cortex remaining in the centre of one face and a deep triangular (natural) indentation on the opposing face. There is a small area of short stepped retouch on the centre of one long edge. The flint is…

Object type: LEAF ARROWHEAD
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Published
A nearly complete flint knapped late Neolithic to early Bronze Age leaf-shaped arrowhead, dating to c. 4000-1500 BC. Both faces of the arrowhead are invasively retouched, with nearly completely covering removals, particularly on the ventral face. The small protrusion or unfinished portion on the proximal end suggests this arrowhead might have had a purposeful protrusion for hafting. Cf. Bond, 'Guide to the Identification, Assessment and Recording of Lithics, Version 1', p. 147, Fig. 5.133, no. 182. The flint is composed of even dark brown material with no visible chert inclusions.

Object type: MICROBURIN
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Micro burin formed on a small flake with retouch at the proximal end which has removed the bulb of percussion. The percussion waves and arises form previous removals can be seen on the dorsal face. There are some chips from around the edge. There is very short, semi-abrupt, scalar retouch at the distal end on both the right and left edges of the ventral face and the distal point also appears to have been deliberately removed, possibly for hafting. There is short scaler retouch at the proximal end of the right edge on the same face where the retouch has thinned the end to form a project…

Two microliths formed of small sections of larger blades:
Piece 1- on left in photos: Proxinal end of a blade with bulb of percussion and percussion waves. Shallow, invasive, scalar retouch covers the distal face. The distal end has several strikes from the ventral face, possibly in order to break the blade or to neaten the edge. The left (on the dorsal side) edge is very irregular in shape and was possibly embedded into the handle/shaft. It is 19.2mm long, 11.8mm wide and 2.2mm thick; it weighs 0.71 grams.

There is irregular, abrupt scalar retouch down the right edge of the ventral face. In the left edge are three fairly regularly shaped notchs, two made by retouch off the ventral side and one off the distal. It is 39.4mm long, 20.7mm wide and 5.1mm thick, it weighs 3.60 grams. Blade retouched in several places to make a cutting tool. The tertiary blade has multiple arises from previous removals and a clear bulb of percussion and percussion waves although any prepared platform has been lost due to retouch. There is semi abrupt scalar retouch on the ventral side of the distal end. There is a notch created by retouch near the distal end of the right edge on the ventral face, the notch could be a preliminary to breaking the blade or could be for use in woodworking. There is a larger area of continuous semi-invasive, semi-abrupt scalar retouch on the distal face …

Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Heavily worked bladelet core which has had multiple removals. The back is 90% covered by a thick layer of cortex apart from a few accidental breaks near the striking platform. There is a large flat striking platform and evidence of removal of multiple very small blades, all apparently from the same end with some damage from mis-strikes round the edge of the platform. It is 41.7mm long, 26.9mm wide, 16.2mm thick and weighs 20.41 grams. The flint is dark brown in colour.
This is a well formed small core which has been extensively worked to remove as much material as possible. Other mate…

Small flake with extensive retouch and usewear. The tertiary blade was struck from a prepared platform and has a bulb of percussion and percussion waves on the ventral face. An aris from previous flake removals runs down the centre of the dorsal face. The right edge of the dorsal face, left edge of the ventral, has extensive usewear down the entire lengh, the small chips are irregular in spacing, size and in shich face they are struck off. At the proximal end of this edge is a small lengh of abrupt parallel retouch creating a narrower but thick 'base'. The distal end of the right edge …

Microblade or possibly waste flake. The tertiary blade was struck from a prepared platform and has a bulb of percussion and percussion waves on the ventral face. The dorsal face shows evidence of multiple previous removals and some mis-strikes at the proximal end. The long thin shape ending in a point and sharp edges would have made this piece sutiable for use as a piercer or borer without reworking. There is a small chip two thirds of the way along the left edge of the dorsal face but this could be deliberate, usewear or post deposition damage. It is 30.6mm long, 5.5mm wide and 2.8mm …

Part of a heavily worked core which has had multiple removals. The cortex has all been removed and the core appears to have been small when discarded or broken. Some removals appear to be blades and some, as the core was worked smaller, microliths. There is a small part of the striking platform at the top but the back is an irregular break with several facets suggesting the core shattered. This maybe related to a flaw in the flint at one side. There appear to be some attempts to stike off one of the shattered angles suggesting attempts were made to conserve the core and ustilise as muc…

Incomplete flint axehead of Neolithic date (3500 BC – 2100 BC). One end of the axe survives the remainder is lost to an old break. It is pointed oval in section, thickening from the flat butt to the break. The axe was shaped with large, invasive shallow flakes then smaller shallow scaler retouch covering the entire surface of both sides. It is 83.4mm long, 75.9mm wide and 40.8mm thick; it weighs 229.4 grams. Flaked axes were used as tools…

A mesolithic mircolith, dating from 8300 – 3500 BC. The flake is a tertiary flake with arrises and bulb scars on the dorsal face showing where other flakes had previously been removed. The striking platform and bulb of percussion have been lost due of extensive shattering of the flint, possibly around natural cracks in the material at the proximal end, particularly on the dorsal face. This small flake may have been struck off as a core refreshment flake. There is a small amount of short semi-abrupt retouch on the right edge at the distal end of the dorsal face. This may have been int…

Fragment of a Mesolithic (8300-3500 BC) flint blade . The fragment is 25.4mm long, 13.4mm wide, 2.8mm thick and weighs 0.96g. This is a tertiary flake with no cortex and the arrises on the dorsal face suggest numerous flakes had been removed from the core prior to this one. There is a lot of damage to the proximal end of the dorsal face, possibly due to the way it was struck. The bulb of percussion, with bulb scars, and shock waves are clearly visible on the ventral face. The blade has been snapped with a clean break after striking but it is not clear if this was deliberate.

Early - middle neolithic flint D shaped or thumbnail scraper. The scraper has been formed from the proximal end of a large blade flake. It is a tertiary flake with no cortext and arrises on the dorsal face from previous removals. The distal end has been broken off in a straight edge. There is extensive retouch on both edges of both sides and around the proximal end which has removed the bulb of percussion. The retouch is long, semi-abrupt and parallel. A Neolithic (flint) polished handaxe (circa BC 3500-1500). All that remains of this polished handaxe is the highly finished butt end. The handaxe has broken across the centre, leaving what at first looks like a striking platform on the broken section. This flint has been reworked, since being polished as many flakes have been taken off the polished surface leaving only part of the butt end in it original polished state. The cutting edge of the butt end is still very sharp, but again due to later reworking much of the cutting edge has been removed. The later flint knapper may have inten…
